Keep your shading clean and consistent, and don't overuse it. Shading can make or break a design. It's a balancing act.

Change the line art to a lighter color and use multiply if using photoshop. Above everything else play with it till you are happy with it. Also don't be afaird to ask questions.

Learn what screen, multiple, and dodge layers do. It's a big help to be able to use them when you are trying to make things glow.

Color things at a bigger size (like 400x400) then resize and replace the lineart with original lineart. It makes things look better, especilly delicate markings.

Have someone else double check your design. Sometimes when working with a design for awhile you can miss little things like a spot out of place or line art that you forgot to color. Having a second set of eyes can help find little things that will throw off your design

One thing I find makes making designs easier (Not just single designs but maybe multiples or editing) is creating your own layers while coloring. So for instance, create a sublayer under the main body, and make it just for the eyes. That way, all you have to do is lock the layer and erase and color as you please. I do this with all the major components of a pet; the eyes, ears, teeth, scales, feathers, legs, etc.

For all of you working on the SCC Friendship Turtles, this is a great way to make customizing easier! I recommend a different layer for the shell, the skin, the eyes... well, you get it XD

Don't forget to drink water to keep hydrated ! :D That a very important part of running a site and doing art!

Look for, and embrace, criticism. Every mistake and failure is an opportunity to learn and become better.

Have a definite color scheme planned out, and make sure there isn't just one color to a pet; a couple of nice markings can really set off an otherwise unremarkable design =) (but don't overdo it, either...)

Don't use too many markings or it makes it not only annoying to look at but also not something you'd want, personal experience.

Also, use layers-I'm still barely learning how to do it, but they definitely help to make a general and then more detailed version of something.
