Use shading, and be careful of color choice. You want colors that work well together, and help each other shine, not ones that clash.

Especially for basic designs shading, and lineart color choice is very important! Never use black for your shading! Never! I cannot stress this enough! Just don't do it!

adding a lamp or other object of the head of a pet can always be a fun way to mix things up. don't be afraid of adding inanimate objects to a pet the challenge of trying to mix them can really help you grow as an artist.

Similar colours are nice, but a contrasting colour (just a small amount) helps make things pop.(Contrasting is the opposite side of the colour wheel, so blue and orange, purple and yellow, etc)

Mess around with your brush settings! Not just opacity (though that's super useful, particularly when shading & texturing), but scattering, colour dynamics, that kind of thing. You can get some super awesome effects just with default brushes. :3 Also, making your own brushes: not as hard as you'd think!

Other than that, I try and do something new each time I colour; whether that's trying a new way to get $texture, or an edit, or playing with filters... doesn't really matter what. Things don't always work out, of course, but the more you try out the better you get.

Turn everything into sparkleanimals.

Clean lines, smooth coloring or consistent style all over, if you have fuzzy shading in one spot and crisp in another, it's very jarring.
Generally have fun with it, draw and color what you wish to own, if you desperately want it, you did it right, in general.

Know not everyone will like ANYTHING, some folks won't like it, but if you love it, and wish for it to be in your lair, there is a high chance someone else will love it too.

Realistic details stand out the most to me, whether it be in body structure or markings. This tells me that the artist put a lot of thought into what they created, so I appreciate the finished product so much more.

Make everything feline themed! Heh j/k (unless you love felines like me). Actually, make sure your edits match the rest of the body. I've seen so many times where the edits just look so out of place because they were not shaded/highlighted/lined right to match with the non-edited portion.
