From experience:
LISTEN TO YOUR FRIENDS. If they say it looks good, then it looks good, no matter how much you think it doesn't. Self-esteem is something not a lot of artists have, but the watchful eyes of a truthful friend can often show that what WE see as defects, are really just beautiful and unique.

Soft shading is really simple if you get the hang of it.
Also try to do the erase away shading technique.

I like color depth/variety. I'm also a fan of creepy things - pets that look like they're cracked or disintegrating or warped in some way.
