Personality! I always gravitate toward pets that have a special expression or clothing that seems to give them a story, emotion, or a character trait.

Two fun things to know: You can't make the lineart totally black, make it a very dark brown to give it some more depth! When you colour, if you use SAI, then don't always stick to the blur tool, use the water tool to help add a 3d-ness to the image! Oh, and have fun! Whats the point drawing if you can't get motivated?

Coloured shading can make a design really pop :D

Don't forget to color the lines of the pet! Usually they should be a tiny bit darker than the actual pet, though not black.

Patience! Don't rush with the design or take shortcuts - it might save you time, but in the end, pet probably won't look as nice as it would otherwise.

And I really need to listen to that myself as well ^^'

A bit of contrast helps a pet stand out. Light and dark, distinct colors. If everything is similar in shade it tends to look blah.

When designing anything, simple is actually better. You should also have back up plans. Start off with a few small sketches then pick one you like the most and build off it. Think of color schemes, like monochromatic, analogous, cool colors, warm colors, or complementary. It sounds like a lot but it really is easy.

Color the lines and shading, always! <3

Giving the shading a tint of blue or purple or something to it instead of making it just a darker color can make it look really nice. :)

I'm not an artist, but I admire everyone's creations out here and marvel at how they are done. For me, as the admirer ;), I especially like creations are that aren't colored too "busily". That said, the more unique design the better! :D
