I think having a nice balance of colors is important. Some light/pastel, some more saturated and darker. It makes a pet more interesting and eye catching :)

Don't give up on something that isn't totally awesome. Whether you are new to designing, just cannot make it mesh, or really blah on the brain, it takes practice to make your abilities better. So keep trying to work out your vision. If you give up just because the ones you do at the beginning are not nearly as good as others more experienced at designing, you will never have the chance to do better, nor the practice. And, that really is a disappointing thing for not just designers, but the site as wells. Just think of all the great ideas you have that no one else has thought yet. We will never see them if design makers give up because they didn't think they could become site quality.

It is okay to set aside things for later though, if you need a bit to think more about the design.

Lots of hair. Lots of it.

Take some time to figure out the best colour for the lineart. Don't just use the same colour on the entire pet, but see what works best in what area. It can make a design look so much better!

Using airbrush makes nice galaxy effects

Study up on basic color theory! Experiment with the coloring of the shading, a pet with warmer colored shading will have a completely different "feel" to the design than a pet with cooler colored shading!

Don't forget to colour the shading!

what I've found for me always helps is when designing for myself or another, is do what feels right for you. Even when using colors that may not be to your personal taste, just make the design feel right to you regardless of which colors you use. I think that motivates me the most.

Don't be afraid to try something new! New color combinations, new patterns, new styles.... experiment with something and you might find a new way of doing things or something that works/looks even better than your original idea!

This is what I think makes for a good design: It looks realistic but still is either cute or evil or some other trait that makes it special.
