Woah so many great tips!
I can think of 2 for now:
1. Don't forget to constantly check the actual pixels/zoomed out image to get the whole picture of your design.
2. Use Overlay/Soft light layer blending modes for Light parts to get a cool effect, and color burn is good for shadows.

Be careful when working on a bigger scled base. check how your Design will look on 200x200.. some Details may get lost or get a totally different effect.

Personally I feel like vibrant colors are important. I'm not a big fan of customs that look "washed out". But that could just be me.. Who knows.

Don't clutter the design with too many details, just keep it clean and always add a little sparkle. Of course, you can't go wrong with a nice, soft shade of blue ^^

When I make designs on any psd I smudge it a bit so it looks more natural but thats just me like if I do spots or cat markings on a melo. I use gimp best thing I can say is if your pas has alot of different colors change the linear art using free select and then color change each section. Rember to hit select all before you do the next section. Check out the customs I have. The ones with wings my first one I messed up the linear art. Rest are ok silvester took me half hour I like to draw so I draw the markings out in a notebook before I decide colors and which one to do. Also always save a copy as a psd format! If you ever plan on breeding them now a days you will need that psd also if you sell it the new owner might like the psd for breeding purposes.

The best thing you can do when you design a colouration is sticking true to yourself. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to do things - there are merely guidelines that can help you get what you want to achieve. The best art comes from the heart, so the best tip I could give is to listen to it!

Don't force it. If the creative juices aren't flowing, trying to force them will just make you frustrated, and your work will suffer.

(And if this has been suggested already, I apologize. I didn't read through all the posts. ^^; )

Coloured lines always make or break the design. Colour your lines to blend with the design colours.
