Shelter Event

Pets

January is a tough time for shelters. Puppies and kittens are a popular gift for Christmas, but by the time January and February roll around, local shelters are hit by a wave of unwanted Christmas presents. When the novelty of the gift wears off, puppies and kittens are unloaded on shelters in droves, often overwhelming them.

I got my cat from a shelter, and I've been planning on making a large donation to the shelter I got her from. Here she is, by the way.

If you'd like to join with me and contribute to the shelter, I am selling metal customs of the above Oske lineart for $10.00. Half will go to the shelter I'm donating to. With your purchase you'll be sent this item, which you can use to upload your kitty in a box:

Shelter Hearts

If you have a shelter in your town, consider stopping by and giving them a donation - money, pet food, anything you can afford. Right now, they really need it.

Please don't donate to the huge national organizations like Humane Society (do some research on them). They don't help your local shelter.

Thanks.

Thanks for doing this again, Slash! I still think a pet site is a great place to be doing this kind of thing. I adopt all my cats from shelters (though at the moment I have only one). When Serith (#9483) and I move out, we have plans to adopt a few (2 or 3) from our local shelter. They do a wonderful job handling whatever they can, but I know it's hard. The entire time I was working, I was donating a portion of my biweekly paychecks to our local shelter... and as soon as I go back, I plan to continue donating. It was well worth it, too, because our local shelter was able to expand into a much larger facility (and hire more staff!) just this past year.

Aww. <3 That's a great thing to do, Slash. I'd gladly donate, but alas, we barely have enough money for ourselves. Good luck gathering a lot of money, though! :D

Wonderful idea! I have always got my pets from shelters, or picked up off the street. Our local grocery shop also has donation bins so you can buy food there and pop it in to the bin and it goes straight to the pets who need it. I am a little curious why you are only donating half tho.

I have to agree, just finished paying almost $2000.00 in vet bills. Our shelter kitty had Hip Displasia and was limping around in pain. We spent my Christmas Bonus on getting him well again. But he's running around and all better now (well, other than having one leg shaved.)

Yay! Now this is a cause I can really get behind! I'm currently fostering a very sweet kitty for a local pet rescue and I'm glad you're helping yours out.

Shelter pets are the best pets! I swear, it's like they know you are saving them from certain death.
However there are certain shelters (pounds) that should not be donated to as well. Like the heart stick and the gassing ones. I URGE people to adopt from them though, cause what a horrible and in humane way to die.
Thanks so much for doing this! I also advise maybe donating to local rescues as well, they take in a MASS majority of the pets the over crowded shelters euthanize for space.
Oh man I could go on for hours about this stuff. BOO TO PETA AND HSUS/ASPCA Unless they are local ones. The organizations as a whole though....boooooooooo
