Shelter Event

Pets

January is a tough time for shelters. Puppies and kittens are a popular gift for Christmas, but by the time January and February roll around, local shelters are hit by a wave of unwanted Christmas presents. When the novelty of the gift wears off, puppies and kittens are unloaded on shelters in droves, often overwhelming them.

I got my cat from a shelter, and I've been planning on making a large donation to the shelter I got her from. Here she is, by the way.

If you'd like to join with me and contribute to the shelter, I am selling metal customs of the above Oske lineart for $10.00. Half will go to the shelter I'm donating to. With your purchase you'll be sent this item, which you can use to upload your kitty in a box:

If you have a shelter in your town, consider stopping by and giving them a donation - money, pet food, anything you can afford. Right now, they really need it.

Please don't donate to the huge national organizations like Humane Society (do some research on them). They don't help your local shelter.

Thanks.

This is a great idea, but it's very disappointing that only half of the money will go to this good cause. What will the other half be used for?

I have ten dollars... But I gotta ask my dad. O: We have adopted most of my pets from there, except my cat Slicky. I adopted her off the street as well as her... Long past away sister ._. She was hit by a car....

We've adopted our Dog Indie and we did adopt another dog there, but that dog was true to her name... Demon..... We also adopted a cat named Lotus from there as well. :| I would donate, but gotta ask my dad.

for those who cannot donate, adopting an animal at this time of year, whether from a shelter directly or from someone who would otherwise take it to one is also a good way to help with the problem of holiday pets.

many areas, like ours, have the problem compounded by college students off for a prolonged absense releasing their dorm pets - either "temporarily", to shift for themselves until their return in a couple of weeks, or for good...as if any of them are native to a New England winter.

in re Humane Society - no, the only shelters they provide any real support for are their own...but unlike the ASPCA, most of their shelters do not impose a time limit on how long a pet may be kept before euthanasia regardless of whether there is abundant space or not...there are worse people out there.

congrats and salutes to all the other feral cat nurturers out there - we are truly doing something important, and all of you deserve great credit.

while i contribute a portion of the food and medical supplies we scrounge for our feral clowders to our local shelter each week, this time of year i have no work, and thus no money....i wish you the very best for your shelter and hope this initiative raises enough for their successful operation for some time to come.

I would so much donate if I had a credit card which I do not :( It's good to think about those shelters, those near my home are overflowing with unwanted pets right now and it's really sad.

THANK YOU SLASH! *gives giant hug

I volunteer at my local SPCA. Once a week we take pictures of all the animals and upload them to petfinder, shelter buddy, and our Facebook page.

I will definitely be donating.

I love stopping by the closest shelter to me, dropping off food and other such items. It's a good idea if you do stop by to see if they have a list of items they are always in need of. I have a list so I know which brands of food they try to keep their animals consistent on.
Of course money donations as nice too (I just figure it probably saves them foot work to have it brought to them xD).

Aww I'll have to donate to this. My own little (well big now) terror aka Taz is a shelter kitty. In fact he was the exact story of a kitten adopted and then later returned because the person who adopted him lived in an apartment that didn't allow pets. Or so they claimed (Though how you don't know if your apartment allows pets is beyond me especially since any shelter I even checked required a letter from an apartment complex saying you were allowed pets for this very case) I've also helped out with a horse rescue whenever visit my parents. I love how Aywas likes taking on good causes or at least bringing attention to them.
