January is a tough time for shelters. Puppies and kittens are a popular gift for Christmas, but by the time January and February roll around, local shelters are hit by a wave of unwanted Christmas presents. When the novelty of the gift wears off, puppies and kittens are unloaded on shelters in droves, often overwhelming them.
I got my cat from a shelter, and I've been planning on making a large donation to the shelter I got her from. Here she is, by the way.
If you'd like to join with me and contribute to the shelter, I am selling metal customs of the above Oske lineart for $10.00. Half will go to the shelter I'm donating to. With your purchase you'll be sent this item, which you can use to upload your kitty in a box:
Shelter Hearts
If you have a shelter in your town, consider stopping by and giving them a donation - money, pet food, anything you can afford. Right now, they really need it.
Please don't donate to the huge national organizations like Humane Society (do some research on them). They don't help your local shelter.
Thanks.

Yeah, I'd like to do something like this. But donating to a rescue or shelter of our choice.
I don't really have any extra money, in fact the last $10 to my name, went to this. So I'd like to believe it;s going to those less fortunate then myself.

I'm afraid I have to agree with those saying that half the proceeds going to Aywas seems a little steep. I love donating to shelters - especially since all three of my cats and both of my ferrets are rescues or ex-shelter pets - and would have loved to donate to my own local shelter instead, since it suffered a giant fire a few years ago that wiped out the whole cattery and it still hasn't fully recovered. I would have liked to see 90-100% of the donation go to the charity. I guess I will just have to wait until Aywas runs another charity that's more suited to my tastes!

It would also be nice if we could choose from a list of shelters or just submit a receipt of our donation, because I know quite a few shelters around here that need the donations as well.

I definitely agree with Shuufly's comment above. I donate regularly to local organizations (like Indy Feral and local shelters) and am not comfortable seeing half the 'donation' going into the site and the other half to an unknown organization....

I just feel like the way this is being handled isn't very professional. The name of this shelter isn't included in the post, nor is the destination of half of all donated money. I love the idea of money going to shelters because they really do need it, I'm just wondering if this couldn't be handled differently. Hoping I don't offend anyone.

I'm fostering a mother and her three kittens at the moment, and it's amazing how much time and effort the RNZSPCA staff put in to looking after the influx of kittens and thier mums at this time of year. I'm just happy I can do something to help them while I'm unemployed :D
To be honest, I'm rather attached to this mum & kits...it'll be hard to say goodbye >.>; **is a sop**
