Cat in need

Site Update

Update: Fire Deja (#1163) has contacted the shelter but lives in California. They can hold the cat until tonight. Slash is willing to cover the cost to ship the cat, but we need a Florida person to actually go in TODAY and adopt the cat so that he can be transported to Deja.

M-M-Mini + LizzyLiz (#567) has an urgent message to Florida Aywasians:

Do you know anyone who lives near Tampa Bay, Florida who could adopt a cat? There's a really sweet black cat that's due to be killed in a few hours if he can't find a home or enough pledges or a rescue.

His info:

6/6 SIGNED OFF FOR EUTH!!! ARGUS WILL BE EUTHANIZED EARLY IN THE MORNING! If you can adopt, adopt-to-rehome, or rescue, you MUST email [email protected] BEFORE 9AM with the words DO NOT EUTH and the Animal ID# in the subject line (serious adopters and rescues only). Include you name and contact information and let the shelter know you can pick up the cat tomorrow. MUST BE PICKED UP TOMORROW!! You can also try calling the shelter starting at 8AM at 813-744-5660 to make sure your email was seen.

Short little update: Atkins Dover will be staying home so the adoption information can be communicated, while Teahoubd is currently driving to pick up Angus. We are still on a time crunch, since AtkinsDover will be moving, but Bullet may be able to help, if the cat has not been shipped to Déjà by then or adopted by Amethysta yet. Kandria has graciously offered to help with expenses for necessities for the cat. Slash has offered to help with shipping via delta cargo.

I'm so glad someone is going to pick him up. The part that kills me most about this is the shelter's reply. They've had him since 5/23?? That's just over two weeks. Two weeks and they say they can't hold him a day longer. Two weeks and they're ready to give up and end a life, knowing people would pay them to keep him longer. And they have the nerve to use a phrase like "forever home".

I know lots of animals are euthanized all the time, and sometimes even more quickly, but like Badger said, it's a step. And anyone who's been on Aywas for any length of time knows it does fundraisers for shelters in general at least annually, and has done things to help specific animals in the past as well. This isn't new or a one-time thing, though I'd love to see it become even more regular, just as I'd love to see Life Help return. But I'd also much rather see a few animals helped than no animals helped. And perhaps some among us who couldn't help this cat will be inspired to look at their own local shelters soon.

Moreover, though, I hope at least one person on the shelter's end is affected by this. It's a step (and not the first) for our community, but maybe.. upon seeing offers for donations from far and wide in the hopes of buying time for "just" one cat, someone there will reconsider just what an animal's life is worth. Maybe go on to implement some changes big or small, maybe end up adopting themselves down the road, maybe just telling the story to friends and inspiring someone else to consider adoption.

I pray this precious baby is saved in time. But I also pray for positive ripples from this effort. Change almost always starts small, and slow, but change is still change.

Mostly just typing all this because I had mixed feelings when I saw it last night, heh. The cynic in me jumped to the "what about all the other animals??" idea, but I still found myself immediately worried and worrying ever since hoping he'd be okay. Seeing Badger's comments and realizing the thing about ripples finally helped me place why, so I wanted to share mostly for anyone else who felt cynically when they saw it, whether they expressed it here or not.

After all, if you want to get really cynical, you could also consider that cats are self-'domesticated', and that in most places their odds are better being feral than in a kill shelter; or remember that in some places there are catch and release programs to spay and neuter even feral cats to control overpopulation yet many pet owners never bother. There are a lot of places along the chain where people mess up, but the people trying to make a difference, even if it's "just" for one cat? No. Those people are purely wonderful<3 ;-;

Woohoo! He gots a home!! I was really dreading the outcome of this... So many people were wanting to help but couldn't.. I might almost be crying a little bit I'm so happy. Now if only people could be more responsible with their pets so more innocent lives are not threatened like this guy's..!

I hate to say it, but shipping the cat..you might as well put it to death. Unless you are also going to pay a very nice person to drive across the country. Do not place this cat in the hands of any air carrier...

If anyone goes to UGA, check out this shelter! They euthanize perfectly healthy animals that students couldn't keep every day D,: https://www.athenspets.net
