Overbreeding? *Does not compute* -Senpai

For me it's less how many and more where the babies end up. If you shove them all directly into your petshop, then it's definitely overbreeding. But if, say, you're running a free breeding giveaway like Will and Zephy and their orbweavers, I woudln't really be bothered by that.

Gonna also say that I don't see the problem of overbreeding being the problem as much as breeding for profit. -Riri

I don't have much of an opinion on overbreeding. On other pet sites where breeding is easy, some pets get some limits placed upon them to keep them special, but again, that's when breeding's easy and cheap to do. This is a site where breeding is expensive, costs real money, and therefore is much less likely to occur (at least for me, anyway). Because of how much harder it is to breed, if someone wants to breed with a pet of mine and has the money for it, that's fine by me (unless it's special).

If people want to have rules against overbreeding their pets, they should be made to clearly specify their definition of overbreeding, as overbreeding varies wildly from person to person. What one person considers fine will be what another person considers over the top.

I... I don't know. I think everyone should be able to breed their pets as many times as they want to. I think it's kind of silly to limit it, especially the way this site's set up, where breedings take a long time and are fairly expensive anyway? So... I would feel the best saying that people who create lines or own the pets define their own breeding limits, so we still all have the option to make lines rare if we want, or plentiful if we want to do it that way. And I see other people talking about inbreeding, but as far as I've seen here, there's no checks or penalties or restrictions on inbreeding, so I don't see a point to limiting it there, either. I see aywas pets as mostly - when it comes to breeding, anyway - just mixing the colors and lines and patterns of two pets to see what kind of interesting outcome you might get. So I don't think inbreeding should be counted as overbreeding, either, as long as the site's system doesn't have a penalty for inbred babies. And, just because a pet's inbred doesn't mean someone can't still find it pretty or valuable.

I also think 10+ breedings (not babies) can be overbreeding.

Most prominently if they are:

a) in a short period of time

b) by the same user

I think overbreeding has something to do with both the sheer numbers and also the frequency. If a pet is several years old, 8 Offspring on its page suddenly don't seem so many anymore.

Pretty much everyone else who chose to comment due to their opinion not being represented; all of those people have pretty much said the same thing I'd say as well.

I think it's a grey area depending on situation, reason, gain/profit, and lineage.

Honestly, If I could, I'd love to pimp out some particular pet couples I have a number of times together, because the babies will always be new and different. Also, if a good pair makes a good baby, why not use that as many times as you can?

I guess it all boils down to the idea that:
If one person has a means to do something repetitively and it earns them any potential gain (i.e. clout/praise/more pets to love/pets to sell/pets to breed) someone else could always point that out and call it an abuse of power.

Does it make things unbalanced? It could.
But did that person put time, effort, and possibly even a financial investment into their work? Perhaps so.

No one ever goes up to a farmer and says "Hey, you should stop hybrid breeding your tomatoes so much."

I think the definition of overbreeding should be left to the appreciation of the person setting the breeding rules for their pet, as people don't have the same point of view : if someone wants to keep a species somewhat limited, overbreeding won't have the same meaning as for someone open about it.

I agree with ariaalina (#39694) about the breedings within a short span of time being more important than the total number.
Also, it is really interesting to see the diversity of opinions here. I never would have guessed it varied so much!
