Hmmmm... I say he found a magic staff. If you have a sword that would cover physical, so a spiffy magical staff from of would cover the magic side of things. Having both power and magic at ones fingertips certainly would be a combination and a half.

An egg shaped crystal with a key inside!
It can glow when it gets close to what it unlocks, and when it actually gets there, it can crack open to reveal the key!
And it doesn't have to be super big anything, perhaps even something he can wear as a necklace!

He finds a gold custom crystal, lol just kidding
what he does find is a horse. not your typical horse no, but something somewhat like a kirin. It had a golden flowing mane and tail and a golden glow on red scales. this was a legendary horse, who granted it's rider, unlimited/eternal life. Also granting him to gain riches by any means. Unknown to him, there was a cost. His soul.

He jumps down the crack in the earth to find the companion of Earthslayer,a large Drylis made of fire and magma.Since he now controls Earthslayer he can also control the Drylis.

He found a cluster of silver stars, lined with blue, which when used correctly can be used to tear time and space.

He found a whole hord of treasure. There are huge piles of gold and gems and precious things. At the bottom of the pile, off to the side and almost missed, is a plain little pendant made out of a peice of blue crystal hanging from a plain silver chain. It begins to glow as he brings the sword close to it. Curious, he picks it up and both the sword and pendant vibrate and hum musically for a moment. Then the pendant suddenly stops glowing. As he starts to walk on to check out the rest of the treasure, the ground shakes and then swallows up the treasure. He escapes, still holding the pendant. He will soon discover that this worthless looking pendant alows him to pull power from whatever and whoever is around him and feed it through the sword, making it even more powerful.

Ahahaha, I have to add to the craziness xD He found the actual sheath of the sword. Not that plain ol' makeshift he's got! An ancient magical sword has got to have its own special ancient magical sheath.

... Perhaps he found a pile of radioactive sporks? :D
Or maybe a few ebil Diamonds that are actually alive and want to rule the world....
Maybe a black winged cat that wants to befriend him!
What if it was a scroll containing epic secrets, maybe in a foreign language?!
A treasure at the end of the rainbow maybe... Maybe a box containing precious artifacts, like scrolls, rings, and battle armor...
... Strangely enough, I'm thinking they might be Rum Flavored Peas that give him an immense power to beat the gods, but he can only use each (by eating it) once, and it only lasts for a certain amount of time.
Or course, it could easily be a matching sword set, including a dagger and a knife and a scimitar.
