New Skill + Skill Breeding

Site Update

You may have noticed the Lockpick Skill popping up in some bred pets - this is a brand new skill that is only obtained through breeding.

"Lockpick" Skill gives your pet a 50% chance of picking the locks of treasure chests found in adventure.

A new challenge has been added to breeding - the ability to breed to pass down skills.

Most skills have a chance of passing down to offspring from parents. Each parent (of the two, items that add a "third parent" to breedings don't count) will contribute a 10% chance of passing the skill to its offspring. Note that the offspring will automatically get a hidden item skill associated with its genus.

You can read more about skill breeding here.

New skills will be added over time, and players can have fun trying to breed pets with multiple skills to see if they pass them to their offspring.

Yes, surely the skill is not -needed-, but why make something worth more than a PBC when it's not even valued that high given the alternatives? Yes, there's a chance to get it for less than that, but you're going to probably be breeding a pair 20 times at least before you get one, if you're actually trying to get it.

And at a 5% chance (20 breedings) with the cheapest coin you can get the skill with, you're looking at spending at least $160 for just one skill that isn't even worth that kind of money.

No one -needs- the skill. But if they do want it, that's the price they're looking at for it.

I really like this breeding for skills thing, but at the same time I feel like I'm being punished for spending on the more expensive pendants :/

I wasn't going to say anything here, but in the end I feel the need to point out that cost isn't the only issue. The PLBC queues at least are backed up as is. BTW, I don't balme the artists before it turns into that. I just don't feel like we should put more strain on something that's having trouble. It's like a bridge, I don't blame the bridge or the cars for the bridge needing repair, life happens. But I think we should look at fixing the bridge before we offer random muffins to people for driving over the bridge.

I'm sorry but that is a perfect metaphor. I couldn't help but laugh at how silly it is in that regard. xD Thanks for making me feel better about the situation!!

If they really -want- it, it'll be worth that money to them, though. If it's not worth it, as you state, then they won't find it worth it either. I guess I'm not really understanding the issue and why people are so angry about a skill that really isn't that big of a deal. It was put on the table, you can choose to work for it (or buy a pet from someone else that has it and overlay it I suppose) or not, and not really lose much of anything? I wouldn't really call this a game-changing skill, so the outrage just seems strange to me.

I don't think Slash really intended for it to be a huge deal, just a fun little bonus. That's why I'm so confused that people are acting like something important has been taken away from them. You still have keys. When events happen, even people with the lockpick skill will probably use keys instead (because then it's guaranteed, compared to 50%). So...

.... Wow. Ok, I for one love this little addition. It sucks that it's breeding only, but hey, more motivation to breed. xD One thing that can be done to try and lessen the ... disdain here, would be to add in that the lockpick skill can also be obtained randomly via custom creation. You know, use a crystal, possibly get the skill? I dunno, crossed my mind. I mean sure, it still does nothing for those that want it for that one.specific.OMFG.pet but at lesat it would make it more available to the public at large. A lot of the userbase can't afford to buy GP, and with how GP is so damned expensive for the BP conversion.... well, it makes sense. Personally, I love this. Breeding is one of my fave things. I am just a mite on the annoyed side that RBC doesn't count.... or pendants Oh well.

I think this will be fun - IF the global cost of breeding is lowered. I've been playing on and off for years, be I have never bred a single pet for two reasons:

ART: I am not an artist. I can colour, but I can't edit lines. This is somewhat covered by the repository now, which is great! Previously, it was far too expensive for me to commission someone to create a base.

COINS: omfg. Breeding coins are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. Like, I have no idea how people afford them. I really hope the bigger emphasis on breeding will dramatically lower the cost of the breeding coins so EVERYONE has a chance at them, not just those with loads of GP.

Again; I think this idea is a lot of fun, but with the price of breeding, I've always appreciated that Aywas wasn't about breeding - it was about collecting site lets. So. I dunno.

Does that still mean that we'd be unable to overlay bred babies onto another pet? like....we would lose the lockpick skill if we overlayed babies instead? (in that case, how do we actually adventure with a lvl 0 pet? O-o)

This is a lot of outrage over a small, fun feature that frankly doesn't add or take away much at all from the game. TBH I think people need to chill a little.

Echoing Tears -LL swap- (#2704)'s question. I *always* overlay on high level pets for energy purposes and this is near useless if it doesn't transfer, so want to make sure it does.
