SOPA & Internet Censorship

Internet Censorship

If you haven't already heard of SOPA, it's bill going through committee in the US that basically allows the US government to censor the internet, and makes website owners liable for what users post.

All of us need to protest.

The bill means the government can block what YOU view because one person posts something that infringes copyright. That means all video streaming sites are vulnerable, all forums, all pet sites that allow user content, all social networking sites, the moment someone notices a user posting copyrighted material.

It means that web site owners will be legally liable for what their users post, as opposed to now, where they are required to remove content upon being notified of the infringement. And I dunno about you but that sounds like death to user content everywhere.

The efforts of everyone is necessary in making sure Congress hears our outcry about this. To learn more, search for SOPA in an internet search engine and look at the recent news articles, or go to AmericanCensorship.org.

This bill is such bullshit it's not even funny.
But hey, a lot of ridiculous crap has been put through the ringer lately.
Nothing surprises me anymore.
I really hope it doesn't pass though =/.

I do not like this. It is an infringement of the first amendment. However it is not acceptable to use content without the owners permission.

Thanks for raising awareness about this. The more people that know about it, the more people will speak up.

Whaaaaaat? D: Why haven't I heard of this?

... apparently, that's 'cause I'm in Canada - but I am greatly opposed to this idea. Users are not puppets, and if this is the case, someone can post something up to intentionally have a site blocked because they were banned/didn't like something/etc.. That's really not fair to the rest of the user base, nor is it fair to the site's administrators.

I'll go and check it out. Thanks so much for posting this.

I've signed it already and have been getting people I know to sign as well. It is ridiculous. We pay for our internet and already have boundaries which are understandable but this is going way too far. I hope it fails.

In fact guys, instead of (or in addition to) signing an internet petition, contact your local congresscritter's office directly, through email or a phone call. They do respond to contact, especially if you're of voting age. Make them hear you.

D: I've signed up with several protests & I've spread the word on my FaceBook page, too.

Oh so, so so protesting this... and spreading the word on my DA. Wow, fan art wouldn't even be allowed anymore. It's almost like what they tried to do to television in the early 1900's... now look what's allowed. XD ~Haze~

i appended this to the form letter -
"i have already experienced infringement of the constitutional right to free speech imposed by petty dictatorial Mods and Admin on some sites, which regrettably is their privilege within their purview - but extending that already unfair and discriminatory practice to anyone with a grudge and nothing better to do than crossheck for possible infringements is madness incarnate.
Big Brother the supersnoop is already alive and well and living on the internet...please, do NOT offer him and his buddy Mrs. Grundy government sanction."

and will be posting the demo block offered on my info blogs. FairyTaleless, this could EASILY go through - for many govenment officials and agencies it's a gift from heaven, as it gives them a license to swat troublesome flies without messy legalities or the need for legitimate reasons. i don't think they even need to PROVE infringement, just cite it.

Signed. This is a ridiculous notion and even being from the UK I think it's unthinkable to even consider letting this through.
