SOPA & Internet Censorship

Internet Censorship

If you haven't already heard of SOPA, it's bill going through committee in the US that basically allows the US government to censor the internet, and makes website owners liable for what users post.

All of us need to protest.

The bill means the government can block what YOU view because one person posts something that infringes copyright. That means all video streaming sites are vulnerable, all forums, all pet sites that allow user content, all social networking sites, the moment someone notices a user posting copyrighted material.

It means that web site owners will be legally liable for what their users post, as opposed to now, where they are required to remove content upon being notified of the infringement. And I dunno about you but that sounds like death to user content everywhere.

The efforts of everyone is necessary in making sure Congress hears our outcry about this. To learn more, search for SOPA in an internet search engine and look at the recent news articles, or go to AmericanCensorship.org.

Yes! Thank you for posting this in the news! I was eagerly waiting for that post. Signed all petitions I could find. Also people dont forget, it may be a US bill but it WILL affect global websites as well! Just because you are living in europe this doesnt mean you are safe!

I signed. This thing will never pass - with as much as social websites help advertising and things, they have to realize if not for the sake of "rights" that this will be a real blow to the economy in a time when we need every scrap of good in that area that we can get.

They can't legally do this. It doesn't matter what they say, the Supreme Court is more than capable of shooting this down. Unless what we say directly affects the safety of the United States or Congress can come to a consensus on the definition of obscenity, they have no right to censor our words, images, or videos. Though the States, themselves, may make a law about this, the second amendment prohibits Congress from passing this law.
