Site Update

In case you are wondering why the site seems to die every week for eight or ten hours, we're in a very... interesting, to say the least, predicament. Our server is actually devastatingly out of space, so it has moments weekly where it crashes and won't come back online.

I have a new server ordered with 2 TB of space (and actually double the RAM, which I'm interested to see how it handles the site's load) but we're trying to figure out how to migrate the data. You see, when you have a site this large, data migration can take 2-3 days due to the sheer amount of it. Yet, even if you let it migrate data in the background of the old server site running, new data is constantly being added (by the actions all of you take onsite, making pets, exploring, new accounts being registered, forum posts etc.), which means that new data doesn't get copied over to the new server as it's created on the old server.

So we have a fun situation where we're trying to figure out how to minimize the data loss in moving. It's obvious that we can't shut the site down for three or four days to migrate the data; that would just suck for all of us.

I have an idea but we'll just have to see how it pans out. It seems like what takes up the most space are custom images. The goal is to get moved to the new server by next week though.

Well, anyway, that's your little update. This situation is annoying for Yasu and I, believe me...

I'd take the downtime over losing my customs and hard earned stuff.I agree with the masses that this would be better.Just give us a few days notice so we can take an inventory "just in case." And then update us on the progress on your Facebook page.It would be good to post a link on the Aywas home page to direct us to Facebook or a forum while it's down.

Thanks for the update so that we know what's going on! And actually, I agree with Thief Lord Alex's idea of holding a vote. I personally wouldn't mind the site being down for several days as long as I knew it would be coming back, especially if it would be coming back better than ever. A planned downtime is always nicer than the unplanned crashes, and there may be a lot of members who also agree. Otherwise, Fae's idea of posting a warning is also a great idea, as long as having the site running even in a reduced capacity wouldn't hurt your efforts to fix everything or result in information getting lost. And I would agree with clearing out inactive accounts, except for the fact that at least 1/5 of the newbies that go through my adoption center are actually returning members who want to give the game a second chance; unless those accounts are causing huge problems, maybe leaving those. Retiring those uber-common pets though, like the Cuckoo and Corvus Reve, I'm all for that idea whether or *not* it would help this particular situation XD

Same with everyone. More time for me to make customs than to sit and browse aywas.

Someone should make a live aywas chat so in case people want to chat or something...

Isn't 2TB awfully small? my personal machine has 6TB of storage....

I think i'd rather have the site shut down temporarily and not risk losing anything XD *huggles my customs*

I won't blame you guys if it comes down to closing the site for a few days to transfer all the data to make sure nothing gets lost.

I would rather the site shut down for a few days to a week instead of being able to play and yet nothing was saved.

I also agree with shutting down the site for a few days so that we don't loose anything & I also agree that a couple days notice would be nice whatever the decision comes to. :)

I think you've got your answer Slash. It looks like none of us will be quitting over a couple of days downtime to shift to the new server. Can I suggest maybe getting a bunch of extra space (on top of the extra 2TB) to include in the new server though? A little bit of "futureproofing" I guess. I doubt very much that the site will be getting any less popular any time soon, and planning for that would stop this needing to happen again too quickly. I basically live on Aywas but I could cope with not playing for a few days as long as it meant the weekly crashes stopped.

I agree with the few days shutting down idea. Just announce it some days earlier, after the current special events.
It is better to prevent it than replace stuff later. It really sucks for everyone (a good example is what happened to Magistream, twice. On their last crash I lost all of my pets, and even with them again I still think that something is not there. :| )
