Site Update

In case you are wondering why the site seems to die every week for eight or ten hours, we're in a very... interesting, to say the least, predicament. Our server is actually devastatingly out of space, so it has moments weekly where it crashes and won't come back online.

I have a new server ordered with 2 TB of space (and actually double the RAM, which I'm interested to see how it handles the site's load) but we're trying to figure out how to migrate the data. You see, when you have a site this large, data migration can take 2-3 days due to the sheer amount of it. Yet, even if you let it migrate data in the background of the old server site running, new data is constantly being added (by the actions all of you take onsite, making pets, exploring, new accounts being registered, forum posts etc.), which means that new data doesn't get copied over to the new server as it's created on the old server.

So we have a fun situation where we're trying to figure out how to minimize the data loss in moving. It's obvious that we can't shut the site down for three or four days to migrate the data; that would just suck for all of us.

I have an idea but we'll just have to see how it pans out. It seems like what takes up the most space are custom images. The goal is to get moved to the new server by next week though.

Well, anyway, that's your little update. This situation is annoying for Yasu and I, believe me...

I think you should shut the site down for a few days, because I have so much to work on right now and this site is so distracting XD -shot-

Agreeing with Kiara along with other comments. It seems a bit silly to have the site running if there ends up being a period where data won't be saved. I'd be fine being off Aywas for a few days if it means bringing the site back up to proper working order.

As long as it's not like wajas and a few days turns into half a year I'm ok with keeping the site down to get everything over.

i'm with those people who realise that it's almost impossible to fix an engine while it's not only running but in gear...plan a date, make an announcement (probably several of them, on a "countdown" basis), and close things down so that the data can be moved and the new server brought online properly. if you add up the downtime from all the crashes, it amounts to the same thing anyway, and accomplishes nothing. go for it - we all see that it's worthwhile.

Just joining the voices to say that I'd be happy to deal with an off-line period as long as we were warned in advance and had an official off-site place to check for updates (facebook? Wherever.) I think it kind of sounds like it would be easiest for everyone.

Glad to heard about the new server. I've seen sites go through stuff like this before, and moving is never fun or easy in any capacity. Best of luck, though. :)

Would it be possible to disable custom uploads and breeding uploads for the 3-4 days? Ne forum data would be lost obviously, but then there would be minimal pet casualties.

I'm good for a shut down as long as there's a huge warning ahead of time. I have work for you guys to do so I need to copy down pet images and IDs and things. XD It's a good thing the space and crashes were caught before a ton of damage was done. Would you be able to copy some of the data from the backups?

You see, as long as we had, say, a weeks warning, I dont see a problem with shutting the site for 2-3days. In that time, all the old stuff will be able to be added to the new server quicker, and it stops anyone accidently adding new data when it's not going to the new one. Problem solved? :) - V
