Site Update

In case you are wondering why the site seems to die every week for eight or ten hours, we're in a very... interesting, to say the least, predicament. Our server is actually devastatingly out of space, so it has moments weekly where it crashes and won't come back online.

I have a new server ordered with 2 TB of space (and actually double the RAM, which I'm interested to see how it handles the site's load) but we're trying to figure out how to migrate the data. You see, when you have a site this large, data migration can take 2-3 days due to the sheer amount of it. Yet, even if you let it migrate data in the background of the old server site running, new data is constantly being added (by the actions all of you take onsite, making pets, exploring, new accounts being registered, forum posts etc.), which means that new data doesn't get copied over to the new server as it's created on the old server.

So we have a fun situation where we're trying to figure out how to minimize the data loss in moving. It's obvious that we can't shut the site down for three or four days to migrate the data; that would just suck for all of us.

I have an idea but we'll just have to see how it pans out. It seems like what takes up the most space are custom images. The goal is to get moved to the new server by next week though.

Well, anyway, that's your little update. This situation is annoying for Yasu and I, believe me...

If it would make things easier in the long run, shutting the site down for a few days wouldn't be a horrible thing. :U

Hopefully everything works out, whatever the situation may be. More excited by the prospect of having an upgrade of some kind than anything else. :D

Hope everything works out! I know you all can get it fixed up, it will be nice to have less lag issues being a newer server shard. A thought, but really don't know how you all have it set up, might need to dedicate a server alone for image hosting, since that is the largest part of the space? Anyways, that's just my thoughts! ;3
Good luck and will look forward to seeing the improvements as well!!

Oh also it might help to do away with "dead" accounts. I am sure there are plenty of those floating around. And as others have said doing away with items that are null would help. And you might consider some sort of "limit" on custom pets a non-premium account can have.

You said migrate data in the background of the old server site running, new data is constantly being added. If it is saved to the old sever, can it be moved later? Then you could go off line to trasnfer the new data. I already see a maybe problem. Well, it's an idea.

Keep coming up with ideas >.<

Have ya'll considered "retiring" designs so that people can't find them anymore in adventuring situations? Say after 2 months of being released you could retire that particular specie design. Meaning you couldn't get it from eggs, potions, adventuring, ect. That could keep the pet numbers down for sure.

Personally, I would think it better to shut down for a few days than have data loss issues.

I vote just shut down the site for a few days. As long as we're pre-warned, it really shouldn't be a big deal at all. <3 The site needs an upgrade--we all know it.

I really don't see the point of keeping the site up if the data's not going to be saved anyway. It's just going to cause problems when people win something, or get something cool, and then it's taken away from them. Red text on the page won't stop that from happening.

I'd personally be fine with the site going down for the 2-5 days required if it means that we can have 100% up time afterwards. Kinda have to think whats best for the site and not be selfish.
