Site Update

In case you are wondering why the site seems to die every week for eight or ten hours, we're in a very... interesting, to say the least, predicament. Our server is actually devastatingly out of space, so it has moments weekly where it crashes and won't come back online.

I have a new server ordered with 2 TB of space (and actually double the RAM, which I'm interested to see how it handles the site's load) but we're trying to figure out how to migrate the data. You see, when you have a site this large, data migration can take 2-3 days due to the sheer amount of it. Yet, even if you let it migrate data in the background of the old server site running, new data is constantly being added (by the actions all of you take onsite, making pets, exploring, new accounts being registered, forum posts etc.), which means that new data doesn't get copied over to the new server as it's created on the old server.

So we have a fun situation where we're trying to figure out how to minimize the data loss in moving. It's obvious that we can't shut the site down for three or four days to migrate the data; that would just suck for all of us.

I have an idea but we'll just have to see how it pans out. It seems like what takes up the most space are custom images. The goal is to get moved to the new server by next week though.

Well, anyway, that's your little update. This situation is annoying for Yasu and I, believe me...

To be honest I wouldn't mind if the site was shut down for a few days. If it has to work out that way, an ample warning would give users time to deal with communication for commissions or whatever. I wouldn't want to be playing if new info doesn't get saved. That would still render doing most anything on-site pointless and I would just end up avoiding the site until the move is over. Whatever happens, I'm good with it <3 You guys are super awesome to be letting us know about it~

I wouldn't mind if the site was shut down for a few days actually to get things sorted :0 As long as there is a warning first xD

I vote the site be shut down for the time it would take. I have 60+ psds to color so honestly, if the site were down I would probably be focusing on that rather than just iddly fluttering around and not coloring them XD

Yeah, I'd rather see the site shut down a couple days rather than have it up but nothing saves ^.^; I wonder though, would it work to keep the site running regularly but have scheduled 'down times' like a few hours a day where the site goes down to transfer information to the new server, rather than a solid shutdown for 2-5 days? I know if that's possible it would take longer, but then we could still play normally while everything's being transferred. If that idea would work anyway.

I don't think it would be so terrible if the site shut down for a couple of days in order for the transition to be faster and safer :)

I'm with everyone who said they'd rather see the site down a couple days, I'd rather it go down smoothly and everything transfer nice and easy than try to fight with keeping it up for people. If it stops the lag after, it's worth it.

I agree. As long as we got warnings id be okay with the site going down. I also agree with flightless: shutting down the abilities to make customs/ submit breedings like three or four days beforehand would work so there isnt that possibility of them disappearing in the move. --namine

Yeah, site shut down might be best. Only I don't really think they know for sure how long it will take. Could be 2 days, could be longer. With the site lag, I only get in 4 - 5 hours of play, sometimes a lot less before I get frustrated and leave.
