Transgender Day of Remembrance

Site Update

Today is the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, founded to remember, honor and memorialize those who have been victims of transgender hatred, prejudice and violence. Essentially, these people were killed for simply trying to express and enjoy who they truly were. These deaths are not the result of a tragic accident or evil or something similarly blameless--they are the result of actions made by people turning against one another.

We live in an age where violence is disturbingly unsurprising, but that doesn't mean we should complacently accept it, forget the grim realities surrounding us, or think that someone else is going to stand up for you and the things you believe in. Awareness is instrumental in making a difference, so I urge you to please take a few moments and read about the day of remembrance and look over some of those who have fallen to hate-filled homicide. It was illuminating for me, so I hope you'll be affected in some way too.

Actions motivated by hatred aren't okay, and we must never forget that, nor the victims that have fallen to such prejudice.

To my friends and to those of you out there that suffer because the world is blind and cruel. I love you, I honor you and find it a blessing and a joy to know you. You are perfect and wonderful. Do not listen to others be who you know you are with pride because that is what we have for you.

Reminds me of the general bullying that's been going on here lately. I'm in college, and I kinda figured bullying would cease to exist here. Well, apparently not. And it's the cruel "pick at someone's physical appearance for no apparent reason" type of bullying. Bullying makes no sense to me, really. Same goes for killing a person due to the fact that they may look different. -N

It's awful how violence, hatred, and bigotry are acceptable in today's society. Thanks for this, I didn't know they had a day of remembrance.

Thank you for posting this!

I have never understood why people have to resort to violence just because they don't agree with something. If the person is not hurting you or hurting anyone else leave them alone! It is a simple concept but one few bigots care to practice.

The story that really got me was a child born with ambiguous parts being killed by the mother, the one person that child should have been able to rely on completely. All the stories are sad, more so because many of them remain unsolved, but for a child to be killed is just beyond wrong.

Kind of sad that it's been going on for thirteen years and this is the first I've heard of it, but it makes sense! I don't understand what the hell is wrong with people who do things to others just because they're different. -_-
