Transgender Day of Remembrance

Site Update

Today is the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, founded to remember, honor and memorialize those who have been victims of transgender hatred, prejudice and violence. Essentially, these people were killed for simply trying to express and enjoy who they truly were. These deaths are not the result of a tragic accident or evil or something similarly blameless--they are the result of actions made by people turning against one another.

We live in an age where violence is disturbingly unsurprising, but that doesn't mean we should complacently accept it, forget the grim realities surrounding us, or think that someone else is going to stand up for you and the things you believe in. Awareness is instrumental in making a difference, so I urge you to please take a few moments and read about the day of remembrance and look over some of those who have fallen to hate-filled homicide. It was illuminating for me, so I hope you'll be affected in some way too.

Actions motivated by hatred aren't okay, and we must never forget that, nor the victims that have fallen to such prejudice.

Thanks so much for posting this. It's sad to see that people are capable of such things, but it's great to see that the staff here at Aywas sends its support in times like these.

Thank you, Aywas, for not brushing over the T in LGBTQ+. You've officially done better than some organisations explicitly dedicated to furthering the rights of GSM people, simply by acknowledging them.

TW: trans-bigotry + discussion of hate crimes, oi vey

Incidentally, did you know that the average life-span for a trans* person is something like 23 years? Those who aren't cut down by hate crimes or who die in hospitals due to prejudiced doctors hesitating to provide them medical attention fall to suicide as a result of bigotry, bullying and legal disadvantaging. Trans* women are brutally assaulted or murdered when their dates discover the state of their genitalia, and their murderers are let off in court with disgusting frequency. Recently, a trans* woman was violently beaten up in a McDonald's store while the employees filmed the whole thing on their phones and did absolutely nothing to intervene. Hate crimes against trans* people are some of the most horrifying in the world, and so few people are even aware. (Hate crimes in general, are, of course, entirely terrible, but society as a whole seem slightly less ignorant of, say, racism- or sexism-fueled hate crimes.)

You're awesome, Eri. Or Dew. Whoever posted this.

Read one of the stories posted there randomly, one on a V.F.W.

I am absolutely chilled.

I wish I could say something profound or deep, but I've never been an eloquent person. Hate is out there, it always will be as long as there is fear of the unknown and different. I wish it were not true, but it is the saddest state of our world.

The best thing we can teach our children and ourselves is simply acceptance. Acceptance of the unknown and those views that are different then our own, even if we would not make those choices ourselves. I am not Wiccan, but they say it the best, "An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will".

Sadly we have a very long way to go. But thank you for posting this, I was not aware of this remembrance day at all. Shall light a candle for them.

I hate that this is neccessary, but I love that we have this day and that you are bringing this to peoples attention. Blessed be all those who were lost to the stupidity and cruelty of others. ~Valhellion
