Transgender Day of Remembrance

Site Update

Today is the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance, founded to remember, honor and memorialize those who have been victims of transgender hatred, prejudice and violence. Essentially, these people were killed for simply trying to express and enjoy who they truly were. These deaths are not the result of a tragic accident or evil or something similarly blameless--they are the result of actions made by people turning against one another.

We live in an age where violence is disturbingly unsurprising, but that doesn't mean we should complacently accept it, forget the grim realities surrounding us, or think that someone else is going to stand up for you and the things you believe in. Awareness is instrumental in making a difference, so I urge you to please take a few moments and read about the day of remembrance and look over some of those who have fallen to hate-filled homicide. It was illuminating for me, so I hope you'll be affected in some way too.

Actions motivated by hatred aren't okay, and we must never forget that, nor the victims that have fallen to such prejudice.

How did I not know about this day all this time? One of my closest friends growing up killed himself because he was bullied for being transgendered. Not by children at school, but by adults in the community, at work, his parents, etc. I miss him dearly, and I hope noone else ever has to feel that kind of hurt or helplessness.

It's good that there are people out there to support the Transgender community. I have plenty of friends within that community and they are all completely wonderful and shouldn't have to be afraid of expressing who they are.

Thank you for posting this, Eri. I have three trans friends. All three of them have really struggled with who they are. I just don't get how human beings can be so rotten to each other. So thank you for showing the support.

It really is a shame that some people think that just because someone is a little different than them that they have to do such a horrible thing to an innocent life.

This is such a welcome and touching news post. My best friend from high school is transgender, and while we aren't as close now as we used to be, I still admire his bravery and spirit. His family is not accepting, and his strength is just astounding. The ignorance and hate directed towards transgender individuals is disgusting.

Thanks for posting this. <3

it's kind of depressing how many problems would be solved by "hey let's just stop being dicks to each other"

thank you for posting this. I have a few family members that are Transgenders. There are too few good people in the world. It is still nice to know that there are still good people here. Sometimes it is hard to see the good in people. Yet again I my self has been bullied. I am not transgender, but when people find out about my family then the harassment starts. Plus I also have gay brothers and I myself am Bi so I get a lot of problems. For me it does not matter on who you are, what you are, or what you look like. It is who you are at heart that counts. <3

My heart is with the victims. It's sad that we need reminders like this to treat people with the respect and decency that we ALL deserve.

Thank you for posting this. My spouse is transgendered and we always spend a little time this day remembering the fallen. It's a very hard, painful road making the transition from one gender to another and definitely not for the faint of heart. It's definitely hard enough without others trying to hurt or kill the person making the journey! Hate and fear aren't needed, understanding always is.
