Well if that's the case Slash then I suppose that would be true.

Perhaps a bit more clarification next time would benefit those of us with very different definitions as to what a sketch is. Unfortunate as it is there are obviously two very different ideas.

"Virtually every entry was more or less finished with shading... you gotta handle what you HAVE, not what you don't!"

Well if they aren't sketches then then shouldn't only ones that ARE be counted?

We do all have very different definitions of what a sketch is. A majority of the entrants seemed to think a sketch included shading and some background. But I'm not sure future clarification will be needed... I don't think we'll have a grand prize in future contests.

just an added on note:
Sketch as defined by dictionary.com
a simply or hastily executed drawing or painting, especially a preliminary one, giving the essential features without the details.

The only two i see that resemble that are pheonee's and dew's.
If it was goign to be full blown art then it should have been just labeled black &white.

Dictionary definitions don't always match the vision of a concept in the majority's mind though. While dictionary.com says that, a majority of entrants felt that a sketch involves shading and background.

It is truly good to know that. (seriously, no sarcasm meant). And as always up to you. I do apologize if I have offended you for that was not my intention. - kusanku

i wasn't trying to be offensive either, just being honest. just so you know.
i'm a little pissed as stated. but i'll get over it. it's just that i know i could have done way better, had i known that it was supposed to be more detailed.

I'm trying to upload my drawing since two hours... guess I can stop now...

(Not that I had a chance, but wasn't this going until the 31st?)

@ Scav: Awww, please don't take away chances at bigger prizes in the future. :(

@ All: I've actually seen both definitions quick frequently. In many art sites, I tend to see the more basic definition. However, in my art classes at school and professional sites, I have many times seen the definition of a sketch being a piece of art that is done by traditional (usually dry) media. Both definitions are used quite frequently so complaining that they weren't going by the definition is just silly in my opinion. Especially when sites like Wiki use both definitions.

It was also stated that the artist could choose the level of depth. Granted, this note came from a second person on Thursday, but it did come. I do think some clarification would be nice, but they didn't break their rules or anything.

And what's done is done anyways. As Scav said, complaining isn't going to change anything. Let's just all learn from this and move on, 'kay 'kay. :)
