Breeding Subspecies

Pets

So, Frey and I were talking and came up with an idea: what if, with a very small percentage chance, an LBC breeding could result in a baby with an alternate lineart!

So the talk of subspecies has returned, but these are breeding mutations -- or babies that result in an alternate lineart due to the small percentage being achieved. The percentage would be 1% - 5% depending on the species.

Breeding subspecies would have these rules:
- They can only breed to other pets of that same lineart style (LBC)
- Customs would currently not be currently available of the breeding linearts, but possibly in the future. They're rare breeding occurrences!
- Users have the ability to select "no breeding subspecies" while initiating a breeding if they do not want their breeding to have a chance of resulting in a subspecies

What exactly is a subspecies?
A subspecies is a type of genus, like a melo, except that it has a different pose and looks slightly different from the original pet. For example, a subspecies of melo could be a fire melo, or a melo that's flaming from the feet and ears but is in a more action pose.

A breeding subspecies would take on the colors/edits of its parents directly onto the subspecies base, like normal breeding. So, if you bred a horned black melo with a winged red devil melo, you could presumably get a flaming subspecies melo that's black and red with wings and horns :D

Do you have subspecies ideas?
You can submit them here!

So what do you think of the idea of breeding subspecies? Do you have any ideas (aside from actual subspecies themselves) to make it cooler?

YES I love this idea!! Much more likely to use my LBC now! xD No suggestions yet...but if I think of something I'll let you know. :)

No suggestions here, but I think it's an awesome idea. :D -Viola

I do have an idea. They should be able to back-breed; I don't see why that limitation is there. A breeding between a normal pet and a subspecies pet would just result in normal pet babies, or have the exact same percentage chance of alternate lineartism as any other LBC breeding.

Also, each accepted subspecies should show up in the pet's title. So it shouldn't just be Shishkebab the Custom Melo, but Shishkebab the Custom Flame Melo. The pet should still fall under the Melo classification. Actual species subclassing is obviously the idea, I'm just pointing out that that shouldn't be overlooked in implementing it.

This sounds awesome. I do worry about the amount of work it would create for the breeding artists, since there's already such a line. If there's any way to make the queue go faster, though, I'm all for implementing this. And I think the subspecies should maybe only get customs through special events and not through just a regular item (like Lunarises now).

I don't know about this. I'm kinda... so-so about this, too. Different pose might be alright, but the actual "subspecies" thing, the way you described it... If we did instigate subspecies this way, I'd think it should be for like... site-pet breedings only or something to that effect. I don't know how to explain my thought process for this. >>

Agree with what Antiscient said. :3 And I know the fire thing was probably just an example, but I'm curious what rules this might bring for breeding limitations? =/ How different would the pose be? Would there be restrictions on creating custom pets that look similar to a subspecies? On this point, depending how you work it out, I wonder if it's a good idea. Otherwise, I think it sounds great! <3

The subspecies linearts can't breed to the normal linearts because they'd be wildly different. The pose will be 100% changed. People can make customs based on subspecies if they want but they wouldn't have the benefit of the new lineart/pose or the art itself.

I understood that they would be completely different pose and lineart. Is that different than a BC breeding or breedings of, for example, a common pet to an SCC species for colorations?

Nope, it wouldn't be different, but LBCs don't allow two different linearts to breed. They could breed with BCs.

Would we get subspecies for all of the species or just the non-hybrids, Asher?
