An Item Update

Site Update

As you are aware, Aywas has been making some changes - some big, some small - to some of the past elements of the site. One of the most notable changes is the NPC switch.

Despite the successful rolling out of our new cast, there are a lot of things that remain from the earlier days of the site, and while some of them are quite benign and we're happy to keep them as a curiosity, some are not things we're comfortable keeping on site.

Specifically the Handguns.

These are an extremely old item that users were told to collect for a future trade-in opportunity which... well, it never came. With staff changes and idea adjustments, this has left that suggestion and promise to the wayside as the original plan for these items was never passed on.

As Aywas and its lore continues to grow we've found that both staff and users alike don't feel that there is a place for these items on site any more. They are a symbol that reminds us of the violence and tragedies that we face every day - and it's jarring for most of us to cook up such an item while the news tells us of another mass shooting, another police incident, and so on.

We are not trying to make a political statement or a stance on gun ownership - but we are paying attention to those that tell us this makes them feel uncomfortable, and as such we are choosing to take on an old adage: make love, not war.

As I post this the four handgun items are being changed into four snapdragon items. They will come into play in an upcoming event, where we will fulfil the promise of their trade-in being beneficial to the collectors of these items.

For those wondering why we are changing these items but not other gun-based items, this is because the other items are either HA items or an extremely rare find, making them less likely to be obtained, or unobtainable, from games. At this time we have no intent to adjust them or make them unavailable, but should they become an issue we are open to discussing options.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them below and we will try to have answers for you!

oh i think i collected some of those at some point, I am generally anti-gun but thanks to where i live and our gun laws we don't have the horrible issues that other countries are having of late <3 so i associate them more with games than rl, BUT in saying that omg snapdragons are my bae!

I personally approve of this change. ^_^ Everyone is entitled to their opinions on guns - they are, after all, a tool - but thank you for taking our thoughts into consideration! These items did make me a little uncomfortable.

I'm glad that this change happened. I wasn't really fond of these items, so thank you.

♎ Astra ♎ (#16365) - You trade in fossils at the museam for 1k BP and a random item, with a chance that item is the Prehistoric Portal (custom making item for Miokits, Juras and Daevo). That was always their intended purpose, and has been in effect since 2015 ^^

At this time we don't plan to sell the snapdragons in shops, with the exception of Red. I wasn't sure about taking them out just yet since they are already stocking, so that may change in the future.

Maybe for those who collected the guns, they could be available as an AD item for a limited amount of time, so they weren't all over the site, but those who wanted them would have a chance to have them?

Coryn (#71366) - The choice was made to replace them, bringing them back would - to us - defeat the purpose of this retirement, sorry.

Cerine [Busy] (#51249) Yes, I think that was it, now that you mention it! Thanks. So it looks like they did do that thing with Fossils they were talkin' about, eventually. ^.^ I wonder if the number of PSDs of the last Portal species in the Edit Repository ever hit the required number to release the next Genus, though... I stopped paying attention to that, hah.

Eve (#2775) Makes sense, sounds good, thanks! And okay, thanks re: Snapdragons in a shop. They're pretty rare in the shop so it wouldn't impact their availability much either way, I'm just hoping to see the shop status for all four Snapdragons standardized one way or the other. ;D

I understand that there's obviously a large user group here who feels uncomfortable about guns, etc, but I just don't agree with the rationale that automatically links them to tragedies and hardship rather than tools (which is how responsible gun owners see them) I was once very intimidated by guns but, like other things, you can learn a lot from a responsible person who can teach you the intricacies and engineering behind how they work, their history, etc.
It seems like a minor update to a feature/item I wasn't even aware of anyways so I understand from that perspective why you're changing them. As a company it's good to change things based on your audience's preferences, so it means you're doing a good job in that regard though!
