An Item Update

Site Update

As you are aware, Aywas has been making some changes - some big, some small - to some of the past elements of the site. One of the most notable changes is the NPC switch.

Despite the successful rolling out of our new cast, there are a lot of things that remain from the earlier days of the site, and while some of them are quite benign and we're happy to keep them as a curiosity, some are not things we're comfortable keeping on site.

Specifically the Handguns.

These are an extremely old item that users were told to collect for a future trade-in opportunity which... well, it never came. With staff changes and idea adjustments, this has left that suggestion and promise to the wayside as the original plan for these items was never passed on.

As Aywas and its lore continues to grow we've found that both staff and users alike don't feel that there is a place for these items on site any more. They are a symbol that reminds us of the violence and tragedies that we face every day - and it's jarring for most of us to cook up such an item while the news tells us of another mass shooting, another police incident, and so on.

We are not trying to make a political statement or a stance on gun ownership - but we are paying attention to those that tell us this makes them feel uncomfortable, and as such we are choosing to take on an old adage: make love, not war.

As I post this the four handgun items are being changed into four snapdragon items. They will come into play in an upcoming event, where we will fulfil the promise of their trade-in being beneficial to the collectors of these items.

For those wondering why we are changing these items but not other gun-based items, this is because the other items are either HA items or an extremely rare find, making them less likely to be obtained, or unobtainable, from games. At this time we have no intent to adjust them or make them unavailable, but should they become an issue we are open to discussing options.

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them below and we will try to have answers for you!

Oh gosh, I'm glad this is happening. It was so jarring the first time I saw one in cooking, I'm pleased they are being changed and repurposed. Thanks for the update!

Thank you for this change-- it really means a lot! Snapdragons are much more fun than guns anyhow! :D

I can definitely appreciate this, though now it kind of bummed that I trashed all the ones I've gotten. I never knew what they were for and figured they were just another junk item, so I always tossed them. here's to hoping I get more!

I dont mind something being done with the guns since they just seem as normal collectables. If possible I'll keep one of each type just as collectibles but the rest, I had no idea what to do with.

You guys dont need to be deterred from guns because of the mass shootings though. Its the people using the guns that you should be worrying about. Guns are not the only things in the world that can kill you. Did you forget that there were bombs, vehicles, knives, and other heavy blunt things that were often used for murder as well? I remember the old days where there were plenty of bomb threats.Even animals were used as murder weapons too. So we might be just 'uncomfortable' with everything around us :/

Again, I dont mind the changes with the guns. I have no problem with that at all. I just dont really agree with the reasoning for the changes. Hope I'm not sounding unreasonable or anything. Just want to voice out my opinions on this in a civil way. If I misunderstood something, please let me know.

Just so staff knows, i used the guns and the stiletos as something to burn for the trash for treasures. At least they did serve a purpose while around. Will miss then as meaningless items but i welcome the new items as well.

I have always had an aversion to guns so when I got them in pumpkins, ect I always put them back in to get them off of my account. I didn't know thry made others uncomfortable too! (Sorry ;;) I love this change. Thank you so much ;; <3

I approve of this lovely update. I never cared about the collectibles existence one way or the other, but this just feels very nice.

I am not familiar with these gun items in any way so my input isn't really that valuable, but I'm okay with this change! My immediate concern is HAs and pets that have gun-toting personas, but it looks like there are still other (sci-fi) gun items on site that would fit the bill if someone was REALLY insistent on having a gun prop.

Getting rid of an item that doesn't have a purpose but keeping HA items, rare items, and things that do have a purpose sounds like a good compromise. I was never made uncomfortable by the handgun items, in fact they made me smile, but I can see why this decision was made.

Will other items that don't have a purpose gradually be phased out as well?

By the way, I love what you are saying, Dragon Fanatic!
