Manju's Musings

New Game

Hey guys! We're aware that Manju hasn't exactly been very talkative since the introduction of their new game. We've made some adjustments, and they should now be over their temporary bout of shyness. Because of the glitch, some users may find their game settings didn't reset at exactly midnight this morning. To counteract this, everyone's streak has been rolled back, so don't worry, it hasn't been lost! You must be sure to visit Manju before tonight's roll over, however, to ensure the streak continues. Once midnight AST comes tonight, the game should be back to working as intended.

Okay, quick update! [3:33pm]

Yasu figured what went wonky. You can play today if you haven't yet, and you can click again if you have. Even if you miss today you should be okay as tomorrow the scores will remain intact. Please be advised that from 00:00:01 Tuesday 20th June, the coding that will reset a missed day will come back into effect so you MUST click on Tuesday to keep your streak.

Fingers crossed this is the last hiccup - we'll have to tell Manju to not eat the cakes so fast to stop it happening again ;)

You know, the user base would probably love a newspost that mentions that Mayday was a huge success.
There's a lot of worries about the economy (for pretty obvious reasons). Hearing what you just said in a newspost, would undoubtedly make a lot of users really happy. :)

If a user is creating new artwork it does not have to go through the commission panel since they are not using an Aywas base. PBC and SBC are creating new artwork and can have users pay for it directly through paypal or another payment venue without using the commissions panel. New (not already on site) PBC/SBC predictions follow the same rules for USD payments as SCCs do.

If you are basing an existing SBC that is a pet on site already then that would need to go through the commissions panel.

Kita (#3988) - Ah, my mistake then. The KB article just states any breeding prediction cannot be direct pay. o3o

Gwennafran (#22320) - You're right, we should have mentioned it was successful and enabled us to do a lot of things. I guess we're the sorts of people who are used to financial matters being a private thing, so we didn't act in a way that would have been as good and morale boosting for the site as it was for us as staff ^^;

We realized that when we were discussing it to make sure all of staff was on the same page!
I've edited this KB article to say that "New SCC Artwork/PBC Predictions" are allowed to take direct $ payments, so hopefully that should get rid of any confusion!
SBC usually doesn't allow predictions, so I didn't add those since after the Pool Party that information won't be relevant ^^'

Mine also has apparently reset. I get what you guys are trying to do, but also try to understand some of us have dealt with a glitched site feature and now have had it reset. I've had that streak going since I joined, I'm sure others had it going even longer. It's annoying and just one less reason for me to make sure I log in daily after midnight. Manju will still see me for free food, tho. XD

(On that note, I will say I liked it being forgiving. There are just some days a person isn't able to log on, and it can suck to have something reset when you're already dealing with a hard time.)

🌸 SG 🌸 (#36207) Just to expand on what Creek said, the predict event is the first, and perhaps only time that artists can make predicts for SBCs. They're normally not allowed, so all SBC work until this point has gone through the panel.

🌸 SG 🌸 (#36207) The short answer is yes, I could be nicer, but the problem is that no matter how nice I may be a few things happen:

1) someone will ping me going "HOW DARE, WHY SO NEGATIVE". even if my crit came at the end of a "i really like this"! post.

2) a bunch of people will dogpile in to say how wonderful and kind and lovely the staff are and we should be all so grateful excexc

3) the post dies down and whatever the issue is either gets swept under the rug, or staff figures out a solution for the problem further down the line. That's not a "oh staff don't get on things" crack by the way, it's a "dev time and squashing bugs can take months and that's legit".

But that does mean I'm pretty much done caring too much about tone-policing myself as long as I stay within the tos. Because frankly? on posts with a lot of discussion there are always people who bring up far better points and with far more calm and measured tones, and a lot of times i've seen them get dismissed, or have other users come in and dogpile them anyway for not treating the site like it's all roses and fluffy bunnies. Experience has shown me that being direct gets through the smokescreen and gets a less canned-sounding response. And if I saw that time and time again that a more subdued tone would cut through that wall better? That's what I'd use more.

Like yes, the pool party is an awesome thing, alchemy is genius for clearing out my inventory of trash, cooking is better, and the psd upload feature is fantastic. But there are ways to improve, and things to be done to bring people in more and win back trust that's been lost. Having fantastic things doesn't mean the improvements don't also need to happen.

The real frustration comes when people say time after time that we should be grateful- and I'm glad that the team does what they do- but the game wouldn't be here without the playerbase. The artists, the writers, the people who make this mini-economy, they build the community and add physical and social value to the site. That was where a lot of the snapping came from. The staff's responses in the past post or two seemed to be dismissive of that (which you also noted), and I wanted to be like. hey. We're the ones who stuck by and put a lot into this thing. This community was the one who helped during that chargeback fiasco after all, we deserved more than what felt like a "you'll get over it".

the 92 pages back part was because I couldn't remember if it was lesser breeding pendants, holiday pendants, breeding pendants, or engagement rings that'd gotten the nerf. Because if I got that wrong I'd have someone down my throat and trying to use it as a way to invalidate my entire post. Along the way I just kept hitting stuff and going OH MAN, YEAH I REMEMBER THAT NOW. Also yes, it's only original work that can be sold offsite. However after the banfest of those artists I don't take any chances. I just sell services for designs and basing now because I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The final thing is yes, i know what it feels like to have um:
"how you'd feel if someone came in blaming you for everything you or your predecessors had ever done wrong and expecting you to just automatically know how to fix everything without any sign of yielding and little to no appreciation for positive aspects"

because I'm a graphic designer, but right now that's being applied at a print shop in an affluent part of the bay area. a large chunk of my job is getting yelled at. And yes, it sucks. But I also recognize when they have a point, and sometimes? I would have mentally glossed a bit over a concern if I felt it was really minor. The customer proved to me that the issue wasn't minor, and a chorus of voices made an impact on the staff. It's not a perfect system. In fact it's pretty busted, but until the community and staff find better ways to communicate with each other, it's what seems to work.

Conium[treat4treat] (#39365) - I mean... I'm sorry you've had experiences leading to that conclusion, but I don't feel I'm "tone-policing" myself; I've just trained myself to think and talk this way by default. And you say "that doesn't work" but I'm pretty sure I got a more direct and in-depth response than anything I'd noticed prior and the only thing any members pinged me about in response was attempting corrections about predicts. (Which I was right about even if SBCs are only temporarily available to do.)

I don't get involved with news comments super often but I don't recall ever getting a "why so negative" backlash when expressing concerns, nor do I often get such responses in other venues. Of course no one can avoid miscommunication or conflict entirely and it does happen. But in my experience, this works, at least as well as and usually better than anger, and without as much risk of hurting people. You say "it's a busted system but it seems to work". But if you recognize the faults in it, why not work to improve it? Of course I realize this topic seems to be wrapping up, but just something to consider for the future.
