Regarding Deleting Threads

Site Update

Staff have recently been inundated with requests for thread deletions, most often when an account is being sold/moved into. This is creating an unsustainable workload that is impacting other areas of the site.

Due to this we are now formally restricting thread removals to one year old or less from the time of the last post. For example, from today, threads last posted in before July 14th 2014 will no longer be removed from accounts.

Users posting in threads they want deleted to bring them within the time limit will receive a formal warning against their account.

I just mark thread as "delete" and leave it at that. Never actually went and outright asked for a deletion.

Also, now we just need to leave threads alone that are old...we can't go back and reuse them now in case we wanted them deleted in the future, correct?

bd84 (#2783) You can re-use threads, that's fine. If you want to re-use it and plan for it to be active then that's great, it helps actually since you don't need to make a new thread.

What's against the rules is say there's a thread that's 2 years old with no posts. You make one post just so it's current to ask for deletion. That's not ok.

Not sure if it's been asked, but I'm curious has there ever been any thought on aywas for the creator of a thread to be able to delete it on their own like a lot of sites allow?

Erithan (#49253) - It's not something we are interested in doing right now =)

I really dislike this. At least let us delete a thread that's under a day old. Or a few hours. Give us a chance to fix something if we've posted it in the wrong forum section.

SpaceShipRat (#47778) A thread that's under a day old can still be deleted, that isn't changed. The news post is basically saying *only* threads that are one year old (or newer) can be deleted now. Your example would still apply. And if you posted something in the wrong forum, moving is always an option. Mods will still move threads that have been posted in the wrong forum upon request.

755 oh thank goodness for that. I suppose I never tried to delete a thread less than a day old. alright then.

But it is an indirect problem because people move accounts often, and when people have different topics it's hard to tell if that's by the original person, or by the 3rd person that moved in. Your avatar is always up to date so you can only rely on the person's typing style to see if it changed. Most topics that I've made aren't even mine and I had to spend time putting "delete" in every single thread title, and some still aren't deleted because I felt that the discussion left behind was valuable even though I didn't start the thread. I really don't care if I'm pinged back a response but that just defeats the whole purpose of deleting threads in my opinion(inb4 well you moved accounts). It's not like people are trying to hide anything, nor anything from years ago is relevant now, whether it's displayed or not. (and ofc there is the occasional grave-poster keep in mind) The real problem is the forum system is outdated and we don't even have a basic command system like any generic forum boards. You literally need to know how to html a picture in a post, etc and if you request for a thread for it to be deleted, and it's not even technically deleted which really, you could have denied this service in the beginning because its not technically deleted if these threads "don't do any harm"
