Art Usage Reminder

Site Update

It would benefit our community to go over a couple of art courtesy guidelines:

- Please don't provide other people's customs (without their permission) as examples for commissions, GCC requests, breedings, etc. If you are an artist and shown a custom as an example and don't see that custom in your commissioner's lair, ask the commissioner for proof that the owner permitted it as an example.

- Please don't provide specific images or artwork you do not own (without permission) as examples for commissions, GCC requests, breedings, etc. Using these as "inspiration" is becoming an issue because artists are being encouraged to copy these images. Instead, give the artist some description of your idea, keywords to look up on google, provide your own drawings, or stock images that have the appropriate permissions.

- You can easily generate a color palette from an image you like by using this site so providing an image for a color palette should not be necessary. This site also provides palettes for your use.

- Do not save custom images and upload them to outside websites if you don't own the custom in question on your account, or you are not the artist of the custom in question. This is becoming a problem for custom owners and artists who don't like seeing their work uploaded to Dropboxes or image hosting sites by people they either do not know, or do not want to "save" their customs or display them.

Showing courtesy to your fellow user and artist is important when it comes to a community like this running smoothly, so please keep these guidelines in mind for the future.

Hiiro (#755)
so, wait
if you link your own personal art inspiration blog, which has a whole bunch of art from a whole bunch of people (art that they themselves have posted), then in order for you to be able to link that inspiration blog as a theme or prompt or reference on the site, you have to get permission from every artist of every piece of art reblogged on that blog?

or am i taking the wrong thing away from this?

Psst Slash, this link above is a really good image-to-color-palette generator too!

????

Am I reading this the entirely wrong way, or are you now not allowed to post pictures of comms. you've done without asking the person who commissioned it?

I mean, I keep a log of all the comms. I've done, just so I/potential commissioners can see what kinda things I can do, and how my art's improved over time - just doing personal customs definitely wouldn't work very well, as I have uh fairly differeng tastes to most people, but have done a whole lot of comms. that are pretty different to anything I'd do for myself, but the people who asked for'm liked!

So do I need to contact everyone I've done comms. for and ask if it's okay to have their comm on my list, or...?

I thought the same thing at first, but I re-read it and it's a little more clear. It's stating that you are not allowed to give an artist a picture of someone else's art or custom to use as a base point/inspiration. You're still allowed to post a custom you made as an example of your own services, as far as I can tell from this list. The last one specifically states that you are allowed to outsource hosting if you are the artist. It's mostly about people asking for art respecting copyright, etc.

"Do not save custom images and upload them to outside websites if you don't own the custom in question on your account, or you are not the artist of the custom in question."

If you are the artist you are definitely allowed to link to them, especially saying that "Hey I colored this, look at my examples!"

However, I don't think that you can link something you have colored (as a commission/design you have sold to someone else) as like a PLBC prompt, since you do not own the rights to that design and sold it to the person commissioning you?
So basically if it is a commission for someone then you have to get your commissioners approval to "copy" their custom (unless it's generic animal print or nature stuff, since I would probably color 10 snow leopard customs using the same palette and markings?)

You're allowed to repost your own work, just don't use those pets and link them to others if you commission them, because you do not own that pet/character.

Site pets aren't mine... but they are free to use as inspiration still right?

Kita & Riri (#3988) (is this how you ping? I don't know how to ping here) So then if I'm the one who colored it, I have the permission to use it as an example?
