Art Usage Reminder

Site Update

It would benefit our community to go over a couple of art courtesy guidelines:

- Please don't provide other people's customs (without their permission) as examples for commissions, GCC requests, breedings, etc. If you are an artist and shown a custom as an example and don't see that custom in your commissioner's lair, ask the commissioner for proof that the owner permitted it as an example.

- Please don't provide specific images or artwork you do not own (without permission) as examples for commissions, GCC requests, breedings, etc. Using these as "inspiration" is becoming an issue because artists are being encouraged to copy these images. Instead, give the artist some description of your idea, keywords to look up on google, provide your own drawings, or stock images that have the appropriate permissions.

- You can easily generate a color palette from an image you like by using this site so providing an image for a color palette should not be necessary. This site also provides palettes for your use.

- Do not save custom images and upload them to outside websites if you don't own the custom in question on your account, or you are not the artist of the custom in question. This is becoming a problem for custom owners and artists who don't like seeing their work uploaded to Dropboxes or image hosting sites by people they either do not know, or do not want to "save" their customs or display them.

Showing courtesy to your fellow user and artist is important when it comes to a community like this running smoothly, so please keep these guidelines in mind for the future.

Thematic references for GCCs, commissions, or breedings shouldn't be based on others' customs/designs. If you still wish to use your own custom from your lair, that's fine. If its something you want, then like the newspost says, it should be a better description, keywords, or your own images to work from.

Hiiro (#755) By others' customs/designs, is that mainly referring to pets/characters/adopts that belong to other people? In that case I can definitely see the issue, but are all images/artwork excluded as well, even if it's a very loose "here's something that I like" reference? Like if someone were to link a general inspiration blog as a prompt and vaguely say "here are some pretty things", would that be disallowed?

What about posting customs we own?

as an artist, i MUCH prefer image references than descriptions. it shouldn't be a problem if someone links to an image like, "the cape should look a bit like this" or "can you draw this kind of hairstyle"? i mean, i reinterpret that into my own style & make adjustments. while i understand the rules need to be more strict for the GCC deal, for example; personal commissions will be much more difficult if users need to have permission to link me to every single image of inspiration. i think it shows a lack of faith in artists to ban all uses of reference pictures. there can be gaps in communication that present problems like what we've had recently, and that's what mods are for--that's always happened & probably will always happen. but also we should have faith in artists & their ability to make things unique without making everyone's lives more difficult by being overly strict with image links.

I think this pretty straight forward.
1. Is about posting in froums of pets or customs.
2. Is about promote area.
3. Idea of places to help artiest to have Colors for you.
4.Is pretty much don't steal aywas images and upload them to other sites.

Does this sum it up?

Over all ask ask and again ask before using images or pets.

This really shouldn't be any different than it is currently. These are art rules that have always been on Aywas, this announcement is just a reminder of that. Using things for references is okay and they're not being taken away. This reminder is just stating 'unless you own it, get permission from the owner'. In regards to inspirational art blogs, those can be a case-by-case issue. Using them as intended (as references) are generally what the owner has put the artwork up for. But if the resulting product looks more like its the same artwork but with minor deviations instead of 'referring to' the artwork, then it may become a problem.

Hiiro (#755) Thanks for clarifying. :) It should be common sense not to take inspiration or references too far, or to try to mimic another artist's style or character. As far as I'm aware, many artists on here do find image-inclusive prompts helpful and sometimes preferable, as long as the images are used only as a starting point or general aesthetic for a design.

For color palettes, I often have the case that I want to pick certain colors from a picture I see online, without providing the picture itself because of copyright etc...
I have found that there is an extension for Chrome/Firefox called "ColorZilla" that lets you simply pick html color codes from any website, it's really useful!
Just putting that out here ^^
