SOPA & Internet Censorship

Internet Censorship

If you haven't already heard of SOPA, it's bill going through committee in the US that basically allows the US government to censor the internet, and makes website owners liable for what users post.

All of us need to protest.

The bill means the government can block what YOU view because one person posts something that infringes copyright. That means all video streaming sites are vulnerable, all forums, all pet sites that allow user content, all social networking sites, the moment someone notices a user posting copyrighted material.

It means that web site owners will be legally liable for what their users post, as opposed to now, where they are required to remove content upon being notified of the infringement. And I dunno about you but that sounds like death to user content everywhere.

The efforts of everyone is necessary in making sure Congress hears our outcry about this. To learn more, search for SOPA in an internet search engine and look at the recent news articles, or go to AmericanCensorship.org.

Honestly... if that went through, the entire internet would be blocked. It's like the higher a person's position the dumber they get. =_=

What...Are we following China's laws now? The bill will never pass.

For everyone saying "this will never pass" ... the folks who introduced this bill are folks who probably very rarely use the internet. Leahy, who introduced the bill, is over 70. They don't understand the impact of what they're doing because they don't use the internet like we do, and sure, it sounds good on paper when you've got the corporations pushing anti-piracy oh woe is us we're losing money bawww. Please don't sit back and trust that it won't pass - it's already gotten too far already. Speak up. Say something.

If this passes we should just kiss the internet good-bye. You wouldn't be able to talk about anything that's copyrighted. :/ *goes to sign to stop it*

Agreed with Kai; they don't understand the social and creative impact the Internet has had on us in the U.S. and the world because it wasn't around when they were young (or, let's face it, even middle-aged). We need to say something before we lose our free speech over the Internet. If this passes, then it lays the groundwork for them to further censor the Internet for other, non-entertainment reasons, and before you know it, we'll be like China.

D: What is this?!?! D:< Whoever compared this to China is right IMO. I'll try to do what I can.

At the same time I want to see the other side of this bill that let it get this far. I don't like being one-sided. My gut feeling tells me this is bad but I don't have a lot of info yet. There has to be some reason that it got this far. >_>

Way ahead of ya, i signed the letter two days ago. This is BS what they are trying to do and I feel it violates more than a few of our rights. Free speech being very close to the top of that list. Creators may have a right to their works, but they do not have the right to stop us from sharing the work so that others can learn about it and enjoy it. I can understand their plight with piracy, but this takes it too far, if i understand correctly, that for instance even posting pieces of lyrics to a song can be considered copyright infringement. Think of what would happen to Youtube for instance. They would be the first on the list for sure. We are going to have a whole generation revolting if this passes and congress will pay dearly for it.
