Bot: The Little Ponderosa Zoo

Site Update

Hello Fleshlings, I apologize for interrupting your strange... fish related holiday, however The Slashbot has a very important message from Krampus&Friends (#6312), so please take a moment of your time to read this. (TW: Animal Death)

Dear Aywas,

A small town zoo and rescue needs our help!

This place is called The Little Ponderosa Zoo, and it is located in Clinton, Tennessee. They started out as a zoo, but quickly after opening their doors they were flooded by requests from people asking to drop off their exotic pets. So they soon became a zoo and rescue. They are located in my very small town, but the impact they have is country-wide. They have taken in animals from all over the states, from monkeys to foxes to camels to kangaroos. They even have a couple tigers they took in from an animal sanctuary that couldn't keep them permanently. The Little Ponderosa Zoo has been a household name in our little town for years.

On December 4th, an electrical fire burned down the main barn on the property. Employees and fire fighters suffered from burns trying to save as many animals as they could. But unfortunately, they still lost almost 50 animals, including several primates, small cats, foxes, birds, reptiles, and more. But in addition to the loss of life, the barn also held all of their feed and feeding containers. They are desperately reaching out to the community for donations, both monetary and items.

I have been completely heartbroken over this, along with everyone in my community. And I know that this is the sort of thing that Aywas users would want to know about, and would want to help out with. I would love to see my amazing virtual community reach out to this very deserving staple of my offline community. Aywas users have done so much good, and I know they can do that again.

No matter what you can give, be it money, items, thoughts, prayers, or spreading awareness, everything is appreciated!

If you would like to donate Here is a link to their Website

This is horrible. I'm originally from TN, so although I've never gone, the name rings a bell. Definitely struggling right now, but animals are always worth it so I'll do what I can.

On another note...
As much as I love exotic animals and always strive to find responsible and nurturing breeders, the pet trade has become a cesspool of greed and neglect... if it weren't for people trying to make a quick buck, this place never would have been overloaded and probably wouldn't have burnt down. I'm tired of seeing inbreeding and abuse. After my two current hybrids pass, even though they came from an extremely caring and reputable breeder, I don't think exotic pets will be in my home.

(I live so far away, that I wasn't even aware of this tremendous tragedy until now. This is a bummer for me as this sad stuff will be the last thing on my mind before I go to sleep. Perishing in flames/smoke or getting crushed under debris is not an ideal way for sentient organisms to go. At the very least, the ones who had perished can no longer suffer. Cursed are the ones that remain, however, waiting for treatment, food and shelter. They would desperately need help. As a former student of zoology, I deeply appreciate every visit I make to zoos and animal parks, as otherwise I would rarely see many of these organisms in person. And perhaps neither would many other people. The zoo is like a portal to a different world and atmosphere that is in such contrast to the daily lives of humans. To see those organisms that I once knew of only through illustrations on encyclopedias was the biggest thrill in my childhood. Parrot breeds were always the most exotic - their vibrant plumage and quirky behaviours were like nothing I could have imagined! Or the strange anatomical traits of some monotremes are only paralleled by their very special and unique genetic lineages via long-term continental isolation. It's like going to a live showcase museum. At the zoos, I often get to learn of the newest attempts humans are making at the conservation of other animals. I often think that conservation is a futile effort and I don't like the idea of anything kept in captivity and dependency upon humans when they shouldn't even have been brought over to foreign continents in the first place, but I can stand behind zoos because they enable people to have this unique experience that could possibly make them more conscious and considerate of their distant cousins. Most zoos are great and The Little Ponderosa Zoo is one of them and they need support. There might be someone that I know who can help or is in a much better position to do so, so I guess I'll spread the news around for the sake of the other animals in that zoo. I would consider each one of them my friend - without need of reciprocation!)

Thank you so much for telling me about this! I'll be sure to spread the word on my blog and I'll try to squeeze out a donation as well. I wish the best for them.

This is so upsetting. I hope that the donations will help to rebuild. Even though they will never be able to make up the loss :( now I'm crying, too. I wish the best for them. ;;

Is there anything I can do with my GP? To sell it for something I can donate? Think with me what's within Aywas rules ^^
