A note about...notes

Site Update

Hello!

I am here to give a gentle reminder about Breeding Notes when you breed your pets!
First off, artists are not required to follow directions in the notes.

Notes have always been intended to be something to allow users to communicate with artists and gives users a way to provide artists with links to PSDs and color palettes without having the artist start a PM.

Unfortunately, people have also taken advantage of the notes system and treat breedings more like a commission. If an artist receives notes that are treating their breeding like a commission (for example, "the offspring must have X, Y, and Z on it" or "Please use only colors from Parent A and only use the blue from Parent B.") they can message Kaiyo, Vampi, or myself to report it. Users will receive a warning if they are treating a breeding like a commission and giving directions on how an artist should be making their offspring.

Note: Saying something like, "I love Parent A's hair, it's my favorite edit!" or, "Please don't use spiders (or the a specific color, or one thing), I am scared of them!" is not considered giving directions to the artist and you will not receive a warning for things of that nature. When you are listing 2+ things you want on your offspring, or giving suggestions when you use an item that specifically does not need user input (Artist Palette) that is when it begins to be seen as a direction given to an artist.

I also want to note that your prompts for Painted coins should be just that, prompts. You should not have multiple sentences explaining what you would like. A prompt should be a couple of words (10 words maximum) giving the artist a theme for your breeding.

Predictions exist for a reason, if you have a specific outcome in mind for your breeding you should be making predictions and not giving directions to the artist assigned to your breeding.

I usually mention my favorite edit on the parents and frame it as 'this is my favorite edit'--and have occasionally gotten babies that maybe weren't what I wanted, but I accept that as a risk of site breeding, sell or give away the babies, and move on.

THANK YOU for this post! As a breeding artist I don't mind comments like "this is my favorite edit" or "i hate bright yellow if you can avoid that please" or "please no zombie edits" kind of thing, but it makes me super annoyed when people have comments like "Babies MUST have xyz and NOT have abc". That's what predicts are for! Breeding through site artists is supposed to be somewhat unpredictable, that's half the fun of it!

It's even worse to see a list of demands and not a single 'please' in the notes :

I dont do things like this thank god, only time i do something is for PLBC for themes and marking or something that changes color (like artist pallette) , all i ask for is no pink, since im not a huge pink fan, but dont hate it either lol.

im glad to know that i'm allowed to put in things that i would prefer breedings to not have... it's a nice reassurance that if a breeding might have something i'm not comfortable with i can always ask it to not be included :)

As long as it's stuff where it's clearly not you expecting the artist to do it, it should be fine. This is basically to keep artists from getting uncomfortable or from feeling like people are telling them how to do their jobs. If they don't feel uncomfortable with your message to them and do not report it, then you are fine. If you read your message and would be fine receiving something like it on a breeding list, then it should be alright ^^

You aren't going to get a "slap in the face" immediately, at first it's definitely going to be a friendly reminder of "hey just so you're aware breeding artists are uncomfortable with these kinds of notes please keep that in mind!" If it's something that is repeatedly happening after being told "hi, please don't :c" (which is what prompted this news post) then we're going to run into problems xD

Yup, that's totally fine! Artists don't have to listen to your notes, but plenty of them are happy to do so if it's a very small request of "hi I really dislike this color can you please try to stay away from it?"

Ok I have a question are we allowed to show samples of what we what for say like PMC breedings? I mean I might say sunset (for colors and theme) well that's a pretty broad spectrum IMO so I like to add an example of the sunset to show what I'm thinking of in the color range. I like doing this because I've asked for sunset before and got pastels (not a huge fan of) and so I showed that I wanted darker more rich colors. I just assumed it would be ok to show examples of what I'm thinking that way for colors/themes the artist will have an idea of what I'm talking about. As I have found on somethings artist have never heard of it before ex: Tribal sure some people know what that is yet others may not so again I'd like to add an example of what tribal is for me.

So is that wrong to do or is showing examples of the color range I'm thinking of ok?

Broken ๐Ÿ‰ (#1464) I hope not, my understanding of painted coins/add ons we were allowed to put up to 2 pictures.

Kita (#3988) - That's.. mostly reassuring, but the "if you'd be okay receiving it" isn't really a good metric considering the blanket statement implying "this makes all breeding artists uncomfortable so please limit your notes" is makes me dreadful in itself.

When I get something detailed as long as it isn't phrased demandingly I go "oh thank goodness, I know exactly what to do to make sure they're happy, and if there's anything I don't think would comply with the rules or would be hard for me to manage I have the liberty of knowing I don't have to adhere strictly to it but at least I have all this information to hit a lot of the points they want." With few or no notes I take longer to get work done because the conceptual phase stalls me. With long notes that's largely done for me.

I really wish the PSA was "be polite" and not "keep it short" with so much emphasis as to say even 2 requests is pushing it.

I mean I know I'm apparently a huge anomaly but it's still disappointing that something that actively helps me is being so heavily discouraged when we have always had the privilege of being able to ignore requests for any reason.

Another artist can always just choose to ignore requests that make them uncomfortable but in order for me to solicit longer notes would require contacting every user I get assigned and waiting and then risking them not getting back to me until after I've gone ahead and done it and being even more upset if it's not what they wanted because I directly asked them and "then" didn't do it and them knowing exactly who to "blame" for their disappointing babies. And I'm definitely not willing to go through that much so... 8( Yeah.

Just really bummed and discouraged.

Broken ๐Ÿ‰ (#1464) - I usually put it like this: "Colour scheme suggestions: link to pic1, link to pic2" so that the artist may get an idea but still has enough room to chose and vary if they like.
