Wow it's rare that all my top choices are in the running! I usually really like the one that ends up in 4th place: so close but so far away XD

I voted for the 1st one, but it was a toss-up between that and #5 because of the darker skin, so I'm happy to see #5 doing well.

Much as #5 is one of my favs too, the darker skin is a default avatar skin and has nothing in particular to do with the set. So not much point voting for the SKIN - I hope you guys vote for the HA items...

Had to go with set 6... I only need the hair and hat and those are the right color.

I would've gladly modeled my set on a different skin but, but really don't know much about this stuff so just opened up the default PSD and started coloring.

I typed out a long reply on why practically all my bases uses skin tone one, but I fear that might derail this whole thread.

So long story short: I use the lightest not-undead available skin tone for my base for pure technical reasons, as that's what easiest to read on a screen. The lighter the shade, the easier to read on the screen. Easy to read bases = more votes.

Obviously, different rules applies to the colouring contest, where black clothing be default tend to do well. :P

Gwennafran (#22320) Ah, okay, thanks. I personally would prefer a vibrant purple base, but ah, I guess this isn't an intergalactic contest. ;-)

I generally try to avoid very vibrant shades, just as I try to avoid dark shades. While vibrant shades does attract attention (just as light shades), they also generally makes it very hard to see either the shades or highlights on the base.

For bases, you generally want the set to work as a "blank canvas" that the voters can project "their ideal set" onto. Such as say, imagining a galaxy set. :)

In my experience, what works best for "blank canvas bases" are:
- Using as few colours as possible (preferable just one).
- Sticking to very light shades, as they attract the eyes and make it easier to read the set's shades and highlights
- Sticking to muted shades, as vibrant colours in general makes it hard to read the set's shades and highlights

I think I just downloaded the default HA bases from the knowledge base (where they only show the pale color...) I'm guessing that's what most people have done when they make bases.

Having the default download file as skin tone 1 definitively has that effect, yes.

Once upon a time, you were allowed to use your own custom skin for a set, even if it weren't part of the set. Back then, a lot of the base artists (myself included) would literally use white skins, as they pretty much works with all colours and people subconsciously read it as a "blank paper" (or mannequins) with the clothing on top. That meant artists quickly became aware other skins were an option.

We got rules against it, as people started to use very complex custom skins, that weren't part of the set. Which gave votes to the bases for a skin that was not part of the base, and disappointed users once they realised the part they wanted wasn't part of the set.

I actually got skin tone 1-10 set up in a PSD-file myself, but I generally only use that for fully finished and coloured sets to events. Again, I stick to as light as possible shades on my bases. ;)
