Transplant lists can be long, and for every person who receives one there are thousands more waiting, which gave rise to the use of pig kidneys to help those people survive the wait time.
As such, this "Pigney" item is brought to us by kithri (#61863) in honour of World Kidney Day, which is today (March 12th)!
This lovely accessory for your HA will be in Trash For Treasure for the next 24 hours =)

As far as i understand, pigs are used because certain organs are suprisingly 'similar' to human organs. and you have a bunch of pigs getting killed anyway for food. At least the ones giving organs to humans will serve the ones who had them killed for months or years instead of hours.

Thank you for the wonderful awareness item <3
My grandad passed away at the end of last year, near Christmas, as he could not get a kidney transplant because there were "younger people who needed them more" even though he was on the wait list longer than them. While I am very saddened that it happened, I an happy for those who did get to live on.
I am also greatly saddened by the use of pigs for temporary kidney transplants. I mean, I do not in any way prefer the people die to the pigs, but I hope that we can find an alternative method with modern science so that not more pigs need to be killed and have their lives ended 3 (I am a vegan, by the way, and feel very strongly on this, however I do not want ANY animals to die, including humans :c)

JScofi (#49041) That does make sense. But I just can't help thinking about this study I heard of from a while back. It was about a guy who got a heart transplant from a girl who could really play the piano and, even though he had never learned piano, he began to play too. I'm not sure if it was just something faked for the media, but the thought of having characteristics that carry over from what you put in your body....

OMG do I ever know this. I have ESRD myself, and am on Peritoneal Dialysis (I used to be on Hemo, which really stunk). There are so many absurd amounts of tests and things that you need to do in order to even get on that list, and then a million things to do to maintain being on that list (but its for the best to ensure we survive afterward!). I wish and pray and wait for the day to get a kidney. So THANK YOU so much for honoring kidney day! (I'm not Kidney-ing!)

My cousin's husband has Polycystic Kidney Disease and it runs in his family--he had to have both kidneys removed not that long ago because they had enlarged so much they were crushing organs, and they weighed 7 lbs EACH.
My uncle on the other side of the family had his kidneys knocked out of commission by chemo last week....he refused dialysis so we're just playing the waiting game now.

Wow! I wish all of you the best for you or your families as I truely *know* the pain and fear of being on the transplant list, going through both peritoneal dialysis and hemo dialysis and the insane amounts of test just to see if/when an organ is found, if it is any type of a match. I have had 3 kidney transplants as lunlike hearts, they tend to where out after a time and each successive transplant involves more testing because of everything now in the body from the previous transplant. My last transplant was feb 7 2009 so am just past 6 years out.
At those above, pigs are generally used as the organs and vessel system is extremely similar to a human system eand many vessels, heart valves, kidneys, and other things from a pig are used and in the cases of hearts, a porcine *pig* valve can last a long time.
I am hoping that with the new things being done with DNA testing and the new 3D printers that soon we might be avle to print out specific organs that would be direct matches to each person's body so no risk of rejection.
At the one on peritoneal dialysis...if you can stay on that as long as you can, that would be so much better for you and your body than going on the machine hemo dialysis! That type is so limiting in terms of your energy level, food you can eat, stuff you can drink, possible very risky infections and more. I wish you all the best and hope that if your friends and family don't turn out to be a match, that you get a possible match soon.
The one waiting for a liver, that is much harder as you used to have to wait till someone died to get one, but with the newer tech now, a living person can donate by them giving a piece of their liver and the piece will grow to fit the person it is donated to. I hope it all works out.

Our local tv show at night happens to be touching on the kidney issue, dialysis and transplant and stuffs. Watching it every night ended up crying. Reminds me of my Aunt (Passed away last year) and a cousin who had to do dialysis and how much suffering I see all the patients go thru... Ty for the awareness and item.
