Trans Day of Remembrance

Site Update

The Trans Day of Remembrance is November 20th this year. Normally, I don't make news posts about all of the awareness icons that show up on the sidebar, but this one is important enough to me that I need to.

This day was started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans activist, in memory of Rita Hester. She was a transgender woman killed in 1998. The day is a vigil for all of the transgender people killed in the previous year.

"The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice."

- Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

This may not be a very fun topic for Aywas, but this our reality -- mine, yours, everyone's. While it's difficult to hold a vigil online, please at least look at the list of transgender people killed this past year and remember them, think of them, at least once during the upcoming twenty four hours.

I would really appreciate it.

I personally donated $100 to GLAAD in honor of the day.

You can pick up a Transgender Pride Flag from the Advent Calendar today.

Excellent but tragic post. So much hate in our world - being a Jew I get it!
Our world needs more education, awareness and TOLERANCE!

God help all trans people in the US in the entire Aywas family and especially in Brazil.

It doesn't matter what a person is. Whether they're straight or not. Whether they're Cis or not. We all deserve to be happy and be treated politely. We're all human beings. Too many people die due to these types of things. I don't tolerate any hate. There is no use for it.

And I mean to anyone. Any group.

I glanced at the list and had to stop after only a short time, because wow....just....It's disgusting what happens to people that already ridicule themselves for their bodies, but to be killed for it too? I'm so sorry the world failed you all. - L

To add to this, it's still LEGAL in every state but California to say your murder of the trans person was justified because you were just "that shocked" to discover they were trans.

Any hate towards anyone is sad. Anyone that's murdered is sad.

This is so tragic and horrible. Thank you for honoring these brave people, who gave their lives to be themselves. I can only hope someday there will be true equality.

I don't know how to ping but I figured I'll throw this out there re: trigger warnings.

(tw: sexual abuse & violence/death mention)

There are trans people who have been victims of violence and sexual assault and have lived through it. These people need to be taken into consideration and that's why there needs to be a trigger warning. Not because people don't want to look at it or acknowledge it, but because people have lived through it.

Of course this is also aside those who are mentally ill and who's recovery will be put at risk over being triggered.

Either way, never shame someone for needing a trigger warning.

And on the subject of the actual post, rest in peace to the poor souls who had to suffer because of someone's else's hatred and bias. I hope one day we will get to a point where the world won't have to lose precious people before their time over something as simple as gender.

RIP my trans brothers, sisters, and others <3
