Trans Day of Remembrance

Site Update

The Trans Day of Remembrance is November 20th this year. Normally, I don't make news posts about all of the awareness icons that show up on the sidebar, but this one is important enough to me that I need to.

This day was started by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans activist, in memory of Rita Hester. She was a transgender woman killed in 1998. The day is a vigil for all of the transgender people killed in the previous year.

"The Transgender Day of Remembrance seeks to highlight the losses we face due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. I am no stranger to the need to fight for our rights, and the right to simply exist is first and foremost. With so many seeking to erase transgender people -- sometimes in the most brutal ways possible -- it is vitally important that those we lose are remembered, and that we continue to fight for justice."

- Transgender Day of Remembrance founder Gwendolyn Ann Smith

This may not be a very fun topic for Aywas, but this our reality -- mine, yours, everyone's. While it's difficult to hold a vigil online, please at least look at the list of transgender people killed this past year and remember them, think of them, at least once during the upcoming twenty four hours.

I would really appreciate it.

I personally donated $100 to GLAAD in honor of the day.

You can pick up a Transgender Pride Flag from the Advent Calendar today.

That's kind of a gross way of looking at it. We shouldn't go out of our way to trigger people just because it's something they need to know? I mean, I don't know your personal life but panic attacks (or mood swings) are horrible and I'm trying to get by with as few as possible. I don't want anyone else to deal with it when it could have been avoided.

There's an 8 year old on this list. An 8 year old. Who was killed by his DAD. Why. This is absolutely awful. No one should be killed for such a reason. RIP people. I hope that one day the world will be in a state where things like this don't happen.

This is so important, none of these beautiful people should be forgotten. Thank you for recognizing their memories.

I read the list, and am very sad at so much hatred still in the world, simply because someone isn't like the bullies. Every human deserves love and respect until they prove otherwise.

A great message for a great cause, I just wish there had been some sort of content warning before I clicked the link to that list... The rape mentions on some of them were something I could have done without reading and wish I had known to expect.

Rohvannyc (#21192) Things like this news post are important for awareness, which is why everyone should read these except those who would be triggered. Such people already know about this, the fact that it's part of their life already is why such reminders cause horrible psychological and physiological reactions is exactly why they need trigger warnings.

It's very easy to underestimate the /severe/ consequences of not posting content warnings if you yourself don't need them so all this writing is just to educate, I'm not mad at you or anything. Just keep it in mind!

That said, this is all very distressing but I'm at least happy to see that the aywas community is such good people in general! Stay safe everyone...!

Ridiculous that in a so called enlightened age we still have to deal with stupidity such as bias.

So sad reading a list like that and finding children on it.

It really does make me want to be ill when I stop to think about how hatred is still one of the prevailing factors in today's societies.

I'm probably a nerd, but as I reflect on all of the people on this list the words of Yoda come to mind. "Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering."

Except it's more of "Lack of understanding leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to violence, violence leads to suffering and death". Really humanity, I expect better of you. Be kind to one another!

It's horrible the way these people died because of other peoples bigotry and hate for their lifestyle, but some of them are truly nightmarish. Hopefully they have found the acceptance and love they were seeking on the other side, and have no memory of what they suffered through in this life. Thank you to aywas for supporting not only this day, but all the alternative lifestyles.
