Site Update
EDIT- Well, it looks like this no longer applies. :( CS2 isn't being reported as free to download anymore.
Hi artists,
For those of you who aren't aware, Adobe just released Creative Suite 2 (which includes Photoshop) for free. Go read about it here.
It's an older version of their programs, but older is better than nothing, and it's FREE!
Go forth and make beautiful art!

Uhm, I don't wanna rain on anyone's parade, but... I read messages everywhere on the interwebs that it's a misunderstanding and that adobe is NOT providing free copies of CS2: "What is true is that Adobe is terminating the activation servers for CS2...You are only legally entitled to download and install with that serial number if you have a valid license to the product!" I'm not tech savvy at all, so I'm gonna wait and see which turns out to be true...

I've used both photoshop 7, cs2 and cs4 and 5 and CS2 is where they made most of the improvements. I think the only useful feature that I use in photoshop CS4 that isn't in 2 is the tilt canvas, which may be there, but I don't remember it being there.
I paid a ton for my CS4 and the 5 upgrade. Awesome to see adobe actually letting people in to really see their products. They would sell a whole lot more if they ever dropped their prices on their programs.

It's not a hoax, it's a misunderstanding. Adobe is shutting down activation servers for CS2, which means you can pirate it really easily. But it's still not LEGALLY free.

Thank you for posting this, Slash! Seems it'll be helpful to a lot of people. Also have a newer version myself because I adore Adobe stuff; but this will make it much easier for compatibility purposes~
