@ SunshintCat- Candy Cane Custom Crystals (CCCC) are used to create custom Ay pets whereas Candy Cane Custom Orbs are used to create custom Ara pets. These custom making items are for Christmas themed pets.
@Jacklin009- I would guess most of them will be found in chests but may be found through ravines or the random events based on past years.

Sunshine -Orbs work for Ara species and Crystals work for Ay species of pets.
Jacklin -they can be found outside of treasure chests (though likely you'll find more opening up chests.) You can also jump the ravine to try and get them but, it's not as lucky. They are randomly found just adventuring.

I seem to have trouble with these rare items, like with the Candy Canes. For someone with very small BP and treasure key amounts, what's the best way to hunt? Is it worth it to buy off merchants randomly?

What's the difference between the two items? <- Newbie question xD
