This is especially pertinent to Debates and Discussions threads, so consider it in that context. Feel free to voice your opinion or elaborate in the news comments.

No. People lock threads when they dont want to hear others shoot them down, it's bs. >.>

I honestly think they should be able too, but if a mod. should double check the thread to make sure they're not just requesting it because people aren't agreeing with them/they don't like their opinions/etc. This is mainly for the debate/discussion forums. Because I can easily see why people would do that. I accidentally hit "no", though, I meant to say yes but I prefer it when it's based on "why" the OP wants the thread locked. Because I hate it when people lock threads (This isn't just this forum, it's any forum, really) just to "have the last word" or anything like that.

I voted no. My reasoning being that it is something that can end up being used in a rather petulant way. Some people will request their thread to be locked not because of flaming or other rule breaking, but because they don't like the responses they're getting, or the discussion isn't going their way. They can request it to be closed all they want, but mods should only have to lock a thread because of rule breaking, not because the OP doesn't want to deal with it anymore.

I voted no... Mods have a lot to do already without having to keep an eye on everyone's posts for close requests... And since it's on the discussion/debate thread, I almost see it as a "heeeeelp! I started something I can't handle! Make it stop!", which I don't like. If you don't want to keep going with your thread, or the debate went somewhere you don't want it to go, then let it die out. Don't reply anymore... Just my two cents! x3

Ack! Sorry about the double post. X.X I keep forgetting that on this site if I refresh the page it posts again. Sorry again.

Abstaining from vote :P

For debates, I could see leaving it open for a bit longer. Other stuff, e.g. sell threads are pretty harmless when locked XD

I said no, because in a debate forum the debate is for EVERYBODY, not just the OP. One the OP starts it, they can leave the discussion if they wish. There is no reason to lock the topic because the OP does not like the replies or something, and another person have to remake a thread about the same topic. If the OP wants no more part of a debate, they can leave. If the argument is too heated, the moderators can lock it, but on their discretion, not on the OP's

But any other forum I say yes, only because then it is not everybody's, but the OP and the people who respond to it.

(I find a difference between debate and a normal post, because a debate discusses an issue with everybody, not just the OP.)

YES.
Forums should be in theory locked by a user. I believe that once a user starts a forum is it THEIR forum to be monitored by the MODs.
If it's locked by the request of a user then a user who WANTS that forum back just re-create the forum. It's that simple. Repeat forums can just be removed.
