Brushes, Google Images, Copyright, and You

Site Update

Do you like making customs and custom designs? Make sure you're doing it legally.

Brushes/patterns from the internet CANNOT BE USED on an aywas image unless:
- it requires no credit
- it is allowed for commercial purposes
- you list EVERY BRUSH you use under the design in a "brushes/images used" section of your pet's profile, along with a link to the rules of the brush, and keep record of that on your pet forever

Google images or patterns you get off the internet CANNOT BE USED on an aywas image unless:
- it requires no credit
- it is allowed for commercial purposes
- you list EVERY IMAGE you use under the design in a "brushes/images used" section of your pet's profile, along with a link to the rules of the image, and keep record of that on your pet forever

Using images that do not belong to you and you do not have permission to use is THEFT and ILLEGAL. If you do it, we will ban you. So don't do it.

When in doubt, message a moderator with a link to your image/pattern/brush's rules and they will let you know if you can use it.

Suspicious that someone might be using an image without permission? Contact a moderator with a link to the thread.

If a moderator approaches you asking for information about your images, you are required to yield where you got the images from. If you made the image yourself, you are required to show progress layers that prove you are the original artist of the image. Be sure to keep them so you don't have any problems.

Aywas takes art theft very seriously, as we are an art community. We are cracking down on it, and there will be no hand-slapping for thieves.

Uhm... Layers? I haven't done any work on here, but don't generally use layering when I do digiart. Nor do I use online googled images.
So I'm curious... Would you need like a screen shot between the various stages of work? Like when the area's highlighted, then one of the flood fill followed by one of the various stages of shading?
Sorry if this seems weird, but I still use my old PSP8 graphics prog and still do stuff manually so I'm kinda not sure how I'd be able to prove whatever I did was mine and thought I better ask.
Though I agree with the others, this is Definitely a good thing to have in straight up terms without too much in the grey areas about what's acceptable and what isn't on the site.

Oh and how do we prove we made the patterns used? [really wishes this had 'edit post' here some where] Though if you've answered these already, please point me to the post where you did. Thank you.

Thanks for posting this! I rarely use custom brushes for just this reason, I can never remember where I got things from and don't want to accidentally use something I don't have permission for. xD. Much easier to just do everything manually.

Can you use brushes made by yourself?

My Photoshop version is too old to download all those new Custom Brushes everyone else is getting from Deviantart/Tumblr/Where ever xD For once I'm happy about this.

Slash, You should make an official Custom Shed or something of the sort with user made backgrounds, brushes and custom bases that can be used for free. I know that there are a few board out there that offer free bases it would be nice to see them on the site all in one. Would also be nice for newbies to have access to free and legal things to work with. Just an idea....

Oh, I had never even heard of custom brushes till now xD But the image part still confuses me, so is that when you take a picture of something like a swirl design, put it on the pet, make a layer above and draw over the swirl so you get something like it, then delete the swirl? Or more like just pasting it in there?

Is tracing over a pattern you found on the net also illegal? what if its just part of a pattern or you add more onto the tracing?

Tracing is a form of copying...which is still art theft. Which is illegal.

Excellent policy. XD Lucky I make my own textures (with one exception) and usually my own designs (aside from using free commercial vector patterns). But yes. Good. Art theft should not be taken lightly.
