Recode : Starting Over

Site Update

Hi all, I am posting to provide an update regarding the recode. Staff realise this is very overdue, and we are thankful for your continued patience and support.

Over the past year, we have been quiet about the status of the recode out of respect for real-life circumstances impacting our main coder, Yasu. Despite our attempts to reach out, we haven’t been able to contact Yasu and no longer have access to the recode files. The work was being done on a private sandbox server without shared access, which is a mistake we didn’t anticipate. It has served as a hard lesson for us, and we are sorry that it’s had to affect you all.

When coding responsibilities shifted unexpectedly, I stepped in to maintain the live site. While I can manage the existing website, a full recode is unfortunately above my skills. Currently, hiring a senior developer or firm to do the recode is out of our budget, as a site of Aywas scale and complexity requires significantly more funding than we have after our current expenses. We don’t have any plans to crowdfund at this time, though it has been discussed. Currently, it just doesn’t feel right to ask more of the community who has been along for the ride with us.

On a more positive note, we've recently connected with a developer who has kindly taken on the recode as a side project and has already helped us with some of Aywas’ many hiccups. They are starting from square one, using our previously established roadmap. The beginning of this roadmap includes mostly backend work, such as the Breeding Control Panel (BCP) Registration and Sessions.

While restarting isn’t ideal, staff will continue to maintain the site within the constraints of the current code while the recode progresses.

We would also like to thank Yasu for his work over the years and wish him all the best.

Could you please bring the site out of the hibernation phase if the coding is being done "on a side" by one person? What I mean by this is bringing back user-funded events and maybe breeding coins back into circulation.

We have slowly started to do what we can, like returning the suggestions forum for non-code-related things (at this point, touching the code to add things causes major issues for the site stability). We have tried a few ways, but every attempt crashes the site.

User-funded things are still being accepted, but places like Slashbot are backed up. We have many things in the works where users are funding things like new genres that are being done as the site artist is able to work on them. The only thing we can't accept is anything that requires coding.

We have tried to push some events, like collab, the BP sink, and so on, but we have to wiggle it in between the rotating holidays and events because they take artists away from things like Mayday. However, I can say that I am looking for an ideal timeline to run another Collab event, and later in the year, maybe another larger BP sink with higher tiers (I misjudged how fast users would tear through the last event).

I also want to run Risk again, since it's a nice event that requires no skill set to feel "involved." However, finding a balance in the prize/reward so it doesn't feel stale as well.

However, suggestions of non-code (or adventure zone) events are always welcome in the suggestion forum, but that does not guarantee that we will run them.

Slashbot is also open to events and things, as long as they follow the current restrictions: https://www.aywas.com/news/result/?search=slashbot

We are also evaluating site finances, because we'd like to open a few small USD contracts for our loyal artists that have stuck with us through hibernation and non-USD pay. However, that may require an extra push on the Mayday/Black Friday sale, so that we aren't risking our overhead costs, and being able to pay the new Dev.

Coins will be rotated as the teams can handle them. Right now, it doesn't make sense to put out coins that will sit for years.
Yes, it would help burn off GP or even bring in USD, but it would lead to frustration when those coins aren't handled quickly. The whole point of doing limited releases and putting more prediction-based coins out instead is to allow users access to breeding, but not burdening already overstrained wait times.

thanks for the transparency

Thank you for trying to keep the site going despite everything, it sucks to be in this position and the transparency is appreciated. If there were crowdfunding, I'd be happy to contribute! Maybe use a site that allows access to the money even without the target reached?

Firstly, I appreciate the transparency with this and understand the desire to want to reach out to Yasu before bringing this to the community. I can imagine there is/was a great deal of thought put into that before doing so.

From what I understand, the re-coding that Yasu was doing for the Aywas site was started somewhere that staff cannot access it, however it was also unpaid for. Because of this I do understand that staff wouldn't have access to it, unless Yasu was working with another coder specifically.

Does Aywas have a Financial Advisor?

I love you Kandria, thank you and all of the staff for your hard work you put in to keep Aywas alive on top of your own real life responsibilities. Having specific things under lock and key makes it difficult to run a site efficiently but I also understand the owner wanting to protect his IP and such. All the best to Yasu and many thanks to him for all his years of coding and thank you to all the staff for sticking with us, I am sure it has been stressful for you all as well.

What a truly Sisyphean task. I can only imagine how hard it must be to have to come to that conclusion. I won't tread back over the questions that others have asked, as it won't help. All I have to say is this:

It's hard to admit when a mistake has been made, and I am glad that you are able to come forward with the truth of it. I wish for the best for Yasu, whatever may have happened. And I wish for the best for staff in general here, as I imagine you're all going through it quite a bit rn. Just let us know what's happening a bit more often, yeah? Anyway. If it comes to crowdfunding, I'll see what I can spare.
