T4T: You Can Never Learn Too Much

Items

"May 15th-June 15th is Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month (click here to learn more).

Tourette syndrome (TS) is an inherited disorder of the nervous system, characterized by a variable expression of unwanted movements and noises (tics). It is not just what people think where you randomly cuss. Not everyone even cusses due to it. Some people will randomly spurt out other words as well and never once say a cuss word due to it. But it is far more then just words coming out of your mouth it can also make your body move in ways you're not telling it to from a simple twitch of a finger to seizure like movements where the entire body is twitching out of control, only you're not having an actual seizure. Because of this it makes normal life functions difficult if not properly treated."

The item will stock in Trash For Treasure until 11:59pm June 15th.

oh, well alright. I guess I have Tourette's then. I wasn't sure earlier because a few years ago, though I had tics, research told me that the tics had to happen "randomly" or something like that, but for me it happened most often when i was stressed. But the website this post linked does not specify any causes for tics, just that you need to have them! So, nice, I can say I have Tourette's Syndrome and not "unspecified tic disorder" ~ ?

Crowstone (#54793) glad I could help. ya stress can make them happen when I get stressed they get stronger in me. you may just have it very mild and stress makes it show up

I have facial tics (remember the face Merida's mom makes in Brave when she eats the tart? That's basically my facial tic), my neck will occasionally bend to my left shoulder a couple times, and occasionally I mew. I have them (mostly) under control unless I'm really relaxed or comfortable around someone in which case it's harder to maintain.

it's nice to know there's an awareness day for this.

Oh well lookit that! I feel you here, Aywas. I have no verbal ticks but have always been, er, well-- twitchy! It wasn't until recently I was told by a psychiatrist that I have a mild case of Tourettes. I have a blinking tic-- shows up more when I'm stressed. I also roll my shoulders, tense (all) my joints from time to time, and clear my throat habitually. I was offered medication for it, but, well, at this rate I figure I can handle it, haha.

I had a bunch of "habits" as a child, but I grew out of that at about 9-10. I still blurt something out loud when I get one of those really cringeworthy memories/ passing thoughts. (I usually say "it's cold/warm" or just a distressed hum.)

It's not Tourettes but the thing as a child definitely didn't help with my reputation as the weird kid.

Sometimes I jolt and shudder randomly and meow without wanting to? I twitch a lot too. Could I have this? O.o

One of my best friends from high school has Tourette's, and she's also one of those who doesn't swear. She doesn't have any vocal tics at all other than going silent when one of her other tics takes over. She's a mum of.. 4 now I think.. and a published author and owns an antique store with her husband, but when she was younger she had a lot of opportunities denied to her because people were freaked out by her tics. I'm really glad there's an awareness day for it now (I don't think even she knows about that, she didn't mention it on FB) and hopefully one day soon people will stop making life hard for sufferers just because "they might freak out the customers".
