"You can now call me a Kityip!"
The hybrid previously known as a Bunyip has been renamed to Kityip, per a community suggestion, since the original unintentionally shared a name with a mythical creature from Aboriginal/Australian mythology. Our apologies for any confusion or upset this might have caused, as the name was purely meant to be a bunny/fox combo, and was not intended as a cultural slight, and was an oversight on our part.
Thank you for the feedback as always! We hope everyone can enjoy this new hybrid. :3

It amazes me, and not in a good way, how players on a site that works very hard to be welcoming and respectful to all kinds of groups are now saying that a group that *does* have connection to the original meaning of the word are out of line. "Bunyip" may be a cute word, but the point is that *PEOPLE OF THE CULTURE WHERE IT COMES FROM WERE OFFENDED*. It's not just user vs. user, it's people of a culture saying "This is offensive use of a word". The staff's decision to change the name is 100% CORRECT.

Bunyip is NOT just a loch ness monster thank you very much! I feel great about you talking about a part of my culture like that.
And the fact is AGAIN AND AGAIN THE HYBRID DOES NOT REPRESENT THE NAME.
I think speaking as someone who is from and of the culture i can safely say that what you don't "THINK" about is what harms our culture in general, but hey lets just rename the new bunny creature Amaterasu, Pele, Zeus or Mothman..i mean no matter the culture or cause behind it naming a creature after something that exists and doesn't look anything like it just seems odd.

BY THE WAY "the bunyip appears to have formed part of traditional Aboriginal beliefs and stories throughout Australia" It is in fact considered an evil spirit by the Aboriginal people so yeah, in fact it is an important part of our culture.

why are so many people are upset by the name change? it doesn't hurt you in any way. it's a name for a pet that you'll maybe have 1 or 2 copies of, versus the misuse of a religious icon/belief from a culture that already faces systematic oppression by people who have marginalized them for centuries. get over yourselves. if it makes someone more comfortable and doesn't hurt you, and it makes the name of the pet more correct - iirc a bunyip is some kind of crocodile swamp monster - i don't see why the name change has to be a problem. thank you for your consideration of other cultures, staff!

Ecto Spooks (#47422) Sorry, what I meant is that it's considered a mythos (such as the manticore or the loch ness monster, which certain people do actually care a lot about someone would be mad if you said nessie was 'just' like a bunyip I bet) rather than a g/God, the difference being that nobody worships or gives offerings to bunyip as far as I know? I wasn't saying it wasn't important to people, I'm saying it's not quite like they made a cat based off of Jesus and thus compared to Inari, which basically is Jesus by comparison because there are actual devout followers of them, it's not that big a deal. Inari isn't a ghostfoxpetthing (and sure as heck isn't the personality described! If I was that sect of Shinto and more easily offended I'd be really personally urked at making Inari into basically a non-sentient Loki) so don't claim Inari is 'more accurate' either.

Gosh some people are getting really hurt over peoples opinions! Yes, to me the Bunyip it does look like a Lock Ness monster, seriously there are pictures of it in a swamp T-T. In my opinion I am going to make one of these a Bunyip to spite some of you, & even if it hadn't gotten its name changed THAT WOULD'VE BEEN EVEN COOLER! But no, this is somehow a strict Aywas staff vote, which I do not see why this site used to be so user friendly & now it doesn't seem like you care. Yeah in the past you did not let us vote on the names, & yes no one is going to be happy, but it ISN'T fair you set the name as Bunyip & than change it because SOME users weren't happy it did not fit. Fine I'll complain that Inari is a goddess, & Kodama is a little ghost I saw in Spirited away & not a giant turtle with a forest on it's back! No I am not that user, thank goodness, but that is seeming how this is going to go & it's not fair to some of us users. That is my debate for the day, I do not care if some of you hate me for it, but whatever. Oh & please penalize Valice not Fenris he was in bed when I posted this.

I'm not going to hate you for your opinion - I do however think you're being myopic in refusing to understand the point of why it was changed *shrugs*

It's just a name change, I don't understand why that's such a problem?? They let us vote on other things when they could just look at it and go, that's what is being picked and that's that. (Bases and colors, I see things like that voted on by just staff on a lot of sites). It's just a name. And the previous one offended a group of people, so they felt they should change it, big whoop.
You don't think people should be offended over it because of the other pets? Well you aren't them. Just because you're not offended by that culture having a pet on here named after something important in the culture, doesn't mean another culture can't have a problem with it. You have a problem with it? Start a discussion on it like this name had, and I'm sure others would listen to your thoughts just as well.

You guys know Inari is a religious icon, right? Bunyip is basically a loch ness monster, Inari is basically a god/ess. And, really, I don't see how the first letters of kitsune combined with the noise a kitsune makes is a half-rabbit, it's ridiculous that certain cultures get so miffed at people making jokes that don't hurt them and then go and basically grab as many butchered Japanese jokes they can carry.
Seriously though Shinto is a religion and you're 'stealing' from it and refuse to change, I don't think bunyips have shrines to them anywhere or anyone making offerings or literally anything that would make it more offensive than everything else. My main problem is definitely the lack of any jackalope/rabbit reference in the name.
