The Kityip Hybrid

Pets

Kityip_200.png
"You can now call me a Kityip!"

The hybrid previously known as a Bunyip has been renamed to Kityip, per a community suggestion, since the original unintentionally shared a name with a mythical creature from Aboriginal/Australian mythology. Our apologies for any confusion or upset this might have caused, as the name was purely meant to be a bunny/fox combo, and was not intended as a cultural slight, and was an oversight on our part.

Thank you for the feedback as always! We hope everyone can enjoy this new hybrid. :3

Even so, a lot of users loved the name. It seems like this should have been a little more discussed by the users as well, a lot of us LOVED the name, even if a mythical creature had the name, this seems to be just like the "Moon Moon" incident. A few users complain & we get something we like taken away. We are not trying to complain too much, & we love Aywas, but this seemed very biased~

People maybe have complained because the pet did not resemble our Bunyip whatsoever. I was a bit iffy when I first saw the name but didn't think to complain, I enjoy the name change i think it suits it better but maybe that's because I know what a Bunyip is and to an Australian Aboriginal it does NOT bring up thoughts of cute fluffy bunny hybrids lol.

I don't see why it was a big deal. :/ I liked the other name better. You can keep quoting "facts" about a baby bunny being called a "kit", that's fine. And about the other pets, too. We get the point. I just think the other name was cuter. It fit the pet more, IMO. And yes, I think it should have been a site-wide poll. I'm hardly ever in the forums, so I never saw that discussion. If you want to make it fair for everyone, have a poll, and don't just change the name without warning. Just my two-cents. Not that it matters.

And considering everyone complaining, let me just say this, Just because YOU are not aware of Australian Aboriginal heritage and dreamtime myths does not mean you get to abuse the use of it's creatures and complain about it either, had this been another more well known cultures background i am sure there'd be complaining and a name change too, especially if the name was given to a creature not representing the original at all. I don't remember ever getting to vote on pet names or name changes before and I don't think we should now, just because you 'liked' a name doesn't mean it's appropriate.

Uh, no. I wouldn't care. Because it's the name of a fake pet on a virtual pet site that literally has no bearing on my life at all. I don't get why it's such a big deal. :/

I just think it should have gotten a vote. Because I had no clue about that discussion, it would have been nice to have been clued in.

this is approximately what a bunyip looks like. While I liked the name for how it sounds, I can understand the way those from Down Under would feel slighted if we went around calling a fluffy bunkit the same as their ferocious monster. ...Though Bunkit (Bunny kitsune) (or Bunkitsu?) sounds better than Kityip.

Pfth, that's fluffy & cute, IDK what the big deal is.

I can understand people wanting a vote, but the name would have been changed so really the vote probably would have been only which new name do you want...which isn't up to us it's up to those who own and run this site.

And maybe a site name has no bearing on your life since it's not your culture but maybe take a moment to think of other peoples feelings for one second, I am not usually one to CARE about this kind of stuff but the fact is the creature didn't represent the Bunyip AT ALL, if the pet had, I would not have cared that is my argument to this, it was not a name the suited the pet and it was a name that belongs to a culture who would not appreciate such a creatures name being taken lightly..now Drop Bear...if you want to take that one we wouldn't care.

Regarding this idea that we should have had a vote... We have never taken user votes on genus names and I honestly doubt we ever will because no matter what the majority choose, there will be users who will complain and campaign. That's why we go "this is what it is" and people have to accept it.

As for this issue specifically... Quite obviously staff loved the name too - that's why we called it a Bunyip in the first place. However people rightfully pointed out that it in the context of the creature in Australian mythology it was inappropriate - and had we done our due diligence and Googled it in the first place it would have been Kityip from the start which would have avoided this happening.
