Okay, I'm fairly new, but, uh, What? Seriously? Why are people complaining that we get the best quality arts and artists month after month?
Why are they saying- to roughly summarize "But some artists are BETTER than others, why should the BETTER artists WIN all the time?"

Uhm, because we want well done art, and having less polished art or art that goes off lines/is just a few filters and nothing else, is not what people want to PAY for.

Enter your stuff, and the BEST ones win. Sometimes new artists can create something flipping awesome, and strike just right, but in general, the practiced hand and the skilled artist (the one that does this professionally, or has done it for 10+ YEARS) is going to have more skill than the new person who's only done this as a hobby for the last year or two.

Art is a profession, and one that takes a CRUD TON of HARD work, diligence and perseverance. Props to the same 10-12 people that keep winning. They probably worked their tails off, and draw or color every day. For YEARS.

If you polish your work, and keep plugging at it, EVERY DAY for a few years, you TOO can win multiple times a year.

The system does not need to change- YOU do. Improve your work. Never stop drawing, never stop coloring, make time to draw or doodle EVERY DAY and soon (Within a year or two) you WILL get a HA coloring into the top 3, because YOU will be a contender.

Saying "Give the less talented artists a chance" Is backwards. It's honestly CRIPPLING. Because by saying "Lower the standards! Don't demand only the best!" You are saying, in short, that YOU and those other new artists, Are Not WORTH investing in.

That you don't think you are worth WORKING to improve. That you would rather never GROW or strive to become one of the artists that wins on talent and hard won skill. You would instead prefer to stay semi-skilled, and count on eliminating the SKILLED from competition so you stand a chance.

That said- Sure, I can see potentially making it so that you can't win 3 times in a row if you absolutely MUST change it. It means we will see the top 10 most talented instead of the top 4-6.

But if you feel it is the only way you can ever win, then that is the WRONG reason to do it. YOU are worth improving. And continuing to change the system to cater to the "less talented"? Is not the way to encourage your growth or reward your hard work. Winning on your own merrit, and knowing that YEARS of hard work have made you a REAL contender? THAT is a reward.

Being handed 1st place because you removed all the competition is a hollow victory at best- and one that hurts not just those you remove, but yourself, and everyone aspiring to someday join the race.

You have summed the issue up magnificently freeflier and in agree the standards should not be lowered.

While you seem to be yelling it, you do make a fair argument, and I for one would love to be able to grow as an artist from a pet site competition that people generally just enter for fun. For that though I would personally like some measure of feedback as to why my stuff hasn't made the top cut other than "it's not good enough" or "those were better". No feedback is almost as bad as giving people the victory, as it is very easy to just think that what you need is practice on something completely different than what you were taken out for. Constructive criticism can go a long way for those who know how to take it and who want it. That being said, this isn't necessarily about making money for those who win it or even winning overall, sometimes it's just for fun and seeing how far you can get, but being continually cut out can be very discouraging.

Not to mention "good" is always a matter of opinion anyway.

Way to generalize that the other entries that don't win don't take skill and are based off filters and have very little effort involved. That wasn't condescending of you at all.

The problem here isn't the quality of art that gets accepted and wins, its that the same people win quite often. Yes their designs are great, but so are others and while I view the voting system to be extremely fair, it would be nice to see some other artists in the spotlight every once in a while.

Give freeflier a medal, seriously. The best should always win. If you don't get in this time, try again. Talent and winning doesn't just arrive on a silver platter. - L

Try, try again, but what if you don't realise that you keep making one particular "mistake" that always keeps you from winning? I'm all for giving the prizes to those who really deserve it, but what about actually helping those who don't make it instead of just saying "Oh, sorry, you were worse than so-and-so. Try again next time though, maybe you'll stumble on the magic formula between now and then."

Simple- make a thread asking for feedback on your art.
Happens all the time on FR and Deviant Art and other places.

However, most folks won't give unsolicited criticism, because most people tend to be VERY sensitive to it.
