Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, falls on April 19th this year.
Today.

collectable_memorialcandle.png

We light a candle in memory of those who lost their lives, loved ones and ancestors to one of the cruelest atrocities the world has known.

Six million Jewish men, women and children perished.
The persecution that these people endured permeated out to any group that was considered inferior, any group that challenged the ideals of a specific ideology.
This hatred was founded on everything from faith to sexual orientation to disabilities to race to politics.

To poorly paraphrase some past quotes on the Holocaust, people claimed that if only they had known what was really going on, they would have stopped it. Though the Holocaust is over in some respects, genocide is not, and I think it's important to be reminded of this reality. It's easy to push the grim parts of our world away: close the history book, turn off the TV, claim ignorance to the crimes happening thousands of miles away. We can't pretend like these things haven't happened and that they don't exist, because if we do, how will they stop?

All our differences aside, we are human beings.
If human beings are capable of such cruelty, then they are capable of the same degree of kindness and compassion.
Even if you feel like the smallest person in the world, you always have the power to impact someone else in a positive way. Don't let that opportunity pass you by. Life is too short and too precious to waste it on something like hatred.

You can pick up your own Memorial Candle from the Advent Calendar today or tomorrow.
It will turn your active pet into a Meep made by Sage (#37348) in honor of this day and out of respect for those we remember.

Thank you for this day. I am not of the Jewish faith but my heart is with them. We must cherish life and each day as it comes, as well as seek to increase our understanding of our fellow human beings. The other price of this day is vigilance. We need to keep our eyes open for signs of the strong harming the weak in small ways as well as large. We need to stand up for them and for ourselves. Let us never forget.

This is a wonderful remembrance to bring in to the eyes of all those whom have and have not been affected by this tragedy, even though, it still affect everyone as humanity, just as you stated -- Very well put. My heart goes out to all those whom had their long lost ancestors/family lost in this horrible event that seems like happened yesterday. Thank you Eri for bringing this... you all at Aywas really know what is more important to bring into the light of today. Thank you. :)

I just talked to my family, and it appears that the German family I have were Nazi's, and the other half ? Who knows. I feel the utmost need to apologize upon learning this. Hitler was an amazing leader, with the most horrible motives (could've been put up to good too) did you know, each time you sit in a regular (non college) classroom, you are using hitlers technique ? The leader higher then the rest (the teacher) and everyone else below him (the students) which is actually quite amazing to know. But Hitler was able to brainwash hundreds of men at one time, which means he had the brain of a psychopath (or he just used a higher percent of his brain then we do, Just like Einstein did!) And I honestly apologize. I didn't have many German ancestors (seems like the right word, it was more then two greats ago... So yes it is!) because a good most were Irish, Romanian, British, and tons more... So it means a lot that i'm able to stand here and say I can apologize for any wrong doing that was done upon anybody , and if the Holocaust affected you directly through family or some other close up event, I'm sorry. I get to go to a Holocaust rememberance performance tomorrow at my school, and gah, I feel horrible. I couldn't have controlled what they did, or how it happened, but I just... Why? @_@; ...... And people who make fun of anything relating to the Holocaust has always upset me, especially when people dress up as Hitler and joke around. Its a disgrace. The day a human can laugh at a mass murdering frenzy with torture on the side; Is just, the day I lose respect for most humans at my school (seeing as they did it... e.e) But when I saw a young jewish male laughing I realized the story doesn't need to be told in sadness, you make it fun and enjoyable for the children to learn about-- as long as they don't take it all as another story tale, and now, if anyone does anything Nazi like in Germany, they are arrested, and they act like nothing happened. Germany fell week to a state of Communism, just like Russia, and we still don't seem to fully trust Russia, but we recognize that Germany couldn't do much about their situation because Hitler could hypnotize or brainwash the men into thinking so much more, like they were doing good. I guess Russia just got weak at one point. We grow to recognize the flaws in other things around us, and Germany saw their flaw, accepted it, then killed it to the point it didn't happen according to them. Any country can be pointed at and held accountable for some type of catastrophic event (well most countries) like America and the Indians, and I can't remember more right at this moment ;w; But I guess what i'm saying is I apologize for my ancestors, but I also realize I think many people know that Germany is still trying to apologize in their own way...

I had a pen today, and it was made in Germany, and it was about Jewish funerals, and I almost started crying, it was odd. What are the chances ;_; ... Oh the remembrance day too... X_X;

Thank you, Eri. I mourn for everyone lost in the holocaust.

It may not be stated in this news post, but the Columbine shooting happened 13 years ago tomorrow. I lost several friends to this tragedy and I truly appreciate that there's some kind of memorial for things that happened the day before Hitler's birthday (even if it will only be remembered as a memorial to the holocaust). It was the earmark for the shooters to take whatever vengeance they wanted.

Thank you again <3
