The Shelter Hearts event is nearing its end. You have twenty four hours left to purchase a Shelter Hearts item. Remember, 50% of proceeds made from this item go toward West Suburban Humane Society, the shelter I got my cat from.
You have, as a userbase, purchased 89 Shelter Hearts. If you purchase 125 Shelter Hearts, I'll donate 75% of the proceeds to the shelter. If you manage to purchase a total of 150 Shelter Hearts, I'll donate 100% of the proceeds to the shelter (meaning $1500 total).
Sound good?

I'm not entirely disagreeing with The Wolf Above, because it truly is the case that many times the cost of running the donation drive needs to be funded in some way, and that shelters are happy to get even a slice of the donation and the advertising that goes with it. However, I can't say I'm not saddened with this 50% cut deal. It may be because the company I work with (a small chain of pet food stores) semi-annually runs a donation drive for local shelters and give 100% of the proceeds to them. Thanks to the generosity of the employees and customers, we raised over a hundred grand last year, all of which was split between local, non-profit, no kill shelters. Not only that, our company has a really good return policy, and almost all the food returned gets sent to local shelters too. I've personally carted thousands of pounds of food out to shelters, and I'm just one manager of one of the nearly 20 stores state-wide.
This is why I'm donating my money personally, either directly to the shelter I volunteer at, or through companies that prove to me that 100% goes to a well run shelter. Just my two cents though. I'm not saying that this website doesn't need the 50% cut, but I also can't say it doesn't stop me from donating elsewhere. Besides, often times the company gets some good advertising themselves, if the donation drive is run correctly. I say it's up to us to choose where and why we donate, and to pressure companies and, yes, shelters, to use our money wisely.
Again, I have no idea how this money is being used (another large reason why I'm not donating), the cost of the art, servers and everything else, I'm just some little person who will be donating 100% elsewhere because I'm a picky a-hole. Feel free to feel otherwise.

Not gonna comment on the 50% thing, but I do find it neat that the money's going to the West Suburban Humane Society, since I live near there. Another nice local shelter in need of money is Cat Guardians, for my fellow west-suburbanites. x3

"the fact that Slash is offering it all if that many user's donates PROVES that it's not just for the money"
Eh, not really. This is the first I've heard of them *possibly* donating 100% of the money, and for that to happen we'd have to, in 24 hours, do 2/3 if what we did in the first 13 days of this thing. And since most of the momentum was probably spent the first few days, fat chance of that. While I agree its a nice gesture, the time frames involved seriously give me a bad feeling... Kind of like it was announced so the numbers could be chosen to make us fail >_>

You have a choice: Donate, don't donate. It's that simple. And if $10 really makes one rich.. standards sure have lowered. ;)

I just think Slash is trying to get as much as possible for the Shelter regardless. Given the number of user's on site who spend money here, it's not really set up for us to fail. But if you wish to be cynical than that is your choice.

I don't see how the number of users matters since that likely hasn't changed much since the beginning of the drive, but whatever. I just think that it'd be nice to have established the rules from the start so there'd be no chance the numbers would be rigged, even if that means a higher goal overall.
