Shelter Hearts

Items

The Shelter Hearts event is nearing its end. You have twenty four hours left to purchase a Shelter Hearts item. Remember, 50% of proceeds made from this item go toward West Suburban Humane Society, the shelter I got my cat from.

You have, as a userbase, purchased 89 Shelter Hearts. If you purchase 125 Shelter Hearts, I'll donate 75% of the proceeds to the shelter. If you manage to purchase a total of 150 Shelter Hearts, I'll donate 100% of the proceeds to the shelter (meaning $1500 total).

personally I don't understand why 100% of the proceeds from these doesn't go already, seeing as how it's only a benefit to the site in giving aywas a tax write off for it's business taxes...

OMG you guys are too awesome..... I wish I can do my bit, I would try trade a shelter heart item from someone who donate more? That's the only thing I can do if it can make people donate more...

Honestly, it doesn't sound good.

When I read the first post on these items, I thought Aywas was trying to raise awareness of how shelters need our help, in this month especially. But when I saw you were taking half of the profits, my heart sank.

I understand that if you hired an artist to make the lineart it could cost some money, but I'm sure the profit you would make from it greatly outweighs the cost. Isn't that a small price you would be willing to eat in order to encourage people to donate to these shelters? At this time, it seems like you're not trying to spread awareness, but are trying to profit off of animals suffering.

I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way. Instead of giving people a bad vibe (whether you're intentionally trying to profit from the shelters situation or didn't notice) why don't you fix it? I recommend you donate ALL profits to the shelter, and NOT have that decision weigh on how many of these items your users purchase.

I agree with Kaiten and Moonsoul. I was initially thinking, "Aww, they're donating to a shelter!" Then immediately changed it to "Wow, they've decided to try to make a profit while asking others to donate." If you expect users to pay $15 each in donation, you would think you could donate the price of the having the lineart created. I understand you donated separately, but this just seems like one of those "charities" that helps the poor with 10 cents of every dollar, while finding ways to pocket the rest.

You know, I am really hating the mentality on this post. People complaining they aren't "rich kids" when that has absolutely NOTHING to do with donating money. Nothing at all. Lots of people aren't "rich" and donate.
And Moonsoul, have you ever even looked into how procedes in other donation drives are used? Usually 90% goes to paying and advertising and the fact that Slash is offering it all if that many user's donates PROVES that it's not just for the money. Obviously, the fewer who donate the less money for the cost of it all. For the person who designed the pet, for the person who designed the item, for the servers to accommodate extra strain from more and more pets being placed on the site.
They didn't have to do this at all and it did still raise awareness.
YOU can donate to a local place of your choice. But believe me, under the current way the government works, when they say a percentage goes towards something, it doesn't necessarily mean it does with most of them.
You know, many of you here have made me sick. I originally wasn't donating because I didn't like the pet art. But that's a stupid reason. I'm going to donate and then someone else can make the pet or I'll give it to a new person or a friend.
I wish everyone would stop being so cynical about this.

Agreed, The Wolf Above. (hehe, ironic username in the posts above me xD) The only reason I didn't donate is because I don't have the money, plus I already donate to a shelter in my town, and volunteer there on occasion. Rich has nothing to do with it. I'm far from rich, but I still find it easy enough to set aside a good 20$ or so a month for the shelters, and donate some pet food on occasion. 90% of my pets have been from shelters, too. Only one who hasn't is my newer dog, because he was going to be *probably* killed because he didn't get along with anyone, including customers, at the pet store, so I bought him. If they havent come from shelters, they were rescues. So no, it's not about being rich, it's about having it in your heart to give a little. Animals don't hate, and they dont speak. We're their home and voice. An animal can't tell you it's story, or how it feels. It's why we need to donate so it can feel better, or find the safety of a home.

@ The Wolf Above - exactly!

I don't always do a lot of posting on stuff but needed to put my two cents in on this.
This is a wonderful thing they are doing. The Rescue I'm with would be ecstatic to get 50% of something like this. Around here we are lucky to get any where from 10% - 25%. And believe me we are very grateful for even that. One thing that seems to be getting over looked as well is the fact they are also raising public awareness, not only to this rescue, but to the general need of so many others out there. Unless you are one of the big name Humane Societies most people have no idea a rescue exists, many times right in your own local area. Sure, huge donations are great but get enough people making small ones and pretty soon you have a big one. So small or big every donation is important. And for those not donating because of being on a high horse over the amount going to the rescue the only ones you are hurting are the cats at this rescue by not helping out. Where they would have gotten something from your participation they will now get nothing from your end. And this is not aimed at those who truly can't afford to or prefer giving to a local rescue. And yes,I will be donating here after all as well as doing what I can for the rescue I'm with just to show my support. I only pray the nay sayers do not discourage Aywas from doing this type of thing in the future.

I'm so glad to see other's posting in agreement. THAT'S the Aywas community I've grown to love and respect. It makes me feel so much better and I hope to see us at least get to the 75% if possible. It would be amazing if we could get to the full 100%. I wish it ran to my next pay day so I could give more.
I'd love to see it be extended for another couple of weeks. Maybe until Valentine's Day, as a way to show our love for our furry com-padre's out there.
