Downtime Contest Results!

Contests

To while away the time we had a few games on our tumblr and Facebook pages - as promised, here are the results!

In our tumblr "words-in-a-word" game, Ellory (#804) found 69 correct words in "Quolgarian".

Not to be outdone, over on Facebook Tin & Bloo (#9) found a whopping 484 words in "Manticore"!

Both users receive 1SP.

Our Facebook "Design a Downtime" contest had a clear winner in Toby (#24557) with their "ghostly lion with multiple wispy tails. It had a Cheshire grin with little leaves/flowers dancing around it."

They win 2 Downtime Potions and 1SP!

Over on tumblr however we had a three way tie - so we're putting the final decision for our fifth Downtime pet in your hands!

The vote will close Monday 12th June at 00:01 - good luck!

Tin & Bloo- Super impressive! Ay staff who organized these- thank you! Word games are one of my favorites and it was a stressful day anyways so this was a nice and fun way to pass the time. You didn't have to entertain us, and it's so appreciated that you did. Thanks! Congrats to the others :)

I'll say congrats not just to the winners of the downtime potion contests, but to all you submitted a species. Lots of creativity there, and fun to read.

However, I will NOT congratulate the winners of the word games, I still hold my personal opinion, with a strong hypothesis, that the games were highly unfair, and much dirty playing was involved. The runners can say what they want, but fun games stop being fun when people feel the need to basically use cheat sheets to win. A list of nearly 500 themed words typed in ALPHABETICAL ORDER by memory? Unless these players are Rain Man, not possible. And the dictionary theory holds little water. Using dictionary would require super speed reading, and mistakes and typos would be inevitable. Having seen the way the lists were submitted on FB, I believe it is highly likely that the lists were copy-pasted from anagram/Scrabble word apps. IF I am correct, I just hope you cheaters are happy with yourselves for ruining it for everybody else.

Ellory (#804) - It was our pleasure - we figured that people would be checking in to get updates, so why not offer something a little fun while you're there? Hopefully we'll think up some more things to do for the 25th, just in case!

Aurelian (#71991) - People, like myself, possibly typed their words into a spreadsheet. That not only can tell you how many words you've found, but with a quick button press you can get it organised into alphabetical order for you!

It also allows you to spread it out in groups so you can add or transpose letters in batches, allowing you to come up with combinations you might think don't exist, but it never hurts to put them into the site to see what happens. There were also plenty of words I expected to exist ("oatier", as in having more oats, or "canoer" as a person that canoes) that weren't on the site.

Whether people used sites or apps or not, it was not something that was put in the rules that they shouldn't do - this is something I have learnt from and will ensure that games in the future have minimal chance of such things.

Sandy (#50007) - I wasn't aware that NaNoWriMo 2015 was not completed. Sadly the admin who oversaw those events is no longer with us, but I will look into it and see what I can find out.

Aurelian (#71991) I can only speak for myself but I often do these games out of boredom on my own time. Words are kind of one of my things. I used a dictionary website when I thought something sounded like a word to see if it was, other than that I scribbled away in my school notebook until I found words that were, well...words. I'm that girl who googled if there were competitive boggle tournaments. I'm just that word-crazy? Idk but can promise you this was all my nutty obsession with word games and my intense boredom. I'm sure had I used a scrabble app I'd have found far more for my MANTICORE attempt AND for the QUOL one.

I don't want to seem rude, mind you. Just...feel a little offended myself that someone's first reaction is to say we both must have cheated :(

And let's not forget word association. I got almost 200 words in just an hour doing "oh! cream! And ream, that's a thing, and team. Those are words. And corn! Torn... Worn, oh wait, there's no w, drat... Tear. Near? Rear has duplicate letters... UHM." I only stopped where I did because it had been an hour and my attention span was done and I was tired of putting non-words into the dictionary site (which gave suggestions when I was wrong, too). I can only imagine how many words people got when taking 3 or 4 hours, or the whole time, making and adding to their lists.

Whew, despite other less than admirable jealousy, good work on the word games :)
